Royal Surrey Militia
« on: Sunday 09 May 04 15:12 BST (UK) »
Hope someone may be able to help with my brickwall,I have a Richard Brandis married in Hartlepool to a Jane Dortey(Lister) in 1797 he is listed as a soldier from the Royal Surrey Militia, he then had a son in Sunderland the same year and then a son in Hartlepool in 1802, his wife had another son in 1808 and is listed a the widow of Richard Brandis and the child is listed as a bastard child, I can find no details for his death which I assume must be between 1802 and 1808, does anyone know where I need to go from here and why were the Militia in Hartlepool and Sunderland.
Many thanks

Lynn - Have a look at this website www.surreycc.gov.uk/surreyhistoryservice.  They should hold lists of Militiamen.

Or..

Nip to the Library and get this book Tracing your Ancestors in the PRO by Amanda Bevan - it has lots of info on Military and records for your man will be at Kew.

Hi Lyne
If you click on the seach button at the top of the welcome
page and type in militia you will find enough info to last a life time.
This site is very good for victorian military, I have used it myself and found them very helpful.

Richard Brandis did in fact marry Jane Dohortey (whom was a widow) at St Hildas church Hartlepool March 1797.  The Surrey militia where in Hartlepool.  They had a son Nathan Sotheran and this natahan fathered a nathan sotheran who fathered a Shepherd Sotheran. All in Hartlepool.  Shepherd is my great great granfather.  I would be happy to contact you with further infor or if you have anything to add great.  Thanks Mark

Hello Mark,
This is brilliant to hear from someone who is related to this strange family.
We are distant cousins, your Shepard Southeran is my g g grandmother's brother she was Arabella.
I have lots of info on your line and mine if you want it, but wondered if you might be able to answer one question? Why did they Nathan change his name to Southeran, he is a Brandis when he is born and when he married( I have all the photocopies if you need them) then suddenly in 1841 he is a Southeran. Very strange.
I live in Thornaby just near Hartlepool, so can find lots of info if you ever need anything.
Talk soon
