Lismore Workhouse records
« on: Monday 14 December 09 21:39 GMT (UK) »
After waiting for ages, my Grandfathers birth certificate arrived today and shows that he was born in 1907 in Lismore Workhouse in Co. Waterford.

His name at birth was Matthew Burke (although he was known through most of his life as Matthew Hickey).  His mother is shown as Mary Burke (no date of birth e.t.c.).  There is no father shown.

There are no living relatives that I am aware of who can shed any light on who his father may have been.  Does anyone have any experience of researching Workhouse records and if so could you point me in the right direction.

I can't find any Workhouse records online and must say that it is extremely frustrating......................  :'(
Hickey - Co. Waterford, Boston, New York, Adelaide
Burke - Co. Waterford
Kipps - Bermondsey
Burnett - Bermondsey
Stammers - Bermondsey, Camberwell, Walworth,
Collins - Southwark, S. London
Munday - Camberwell, S. London
Colbert - Co. Waterford

Many workhouses had being converted to Hospitals by this time but were still referred to by the old name.

I am not sure about Lismore though.

Have you found Matthew in 1911 Ireland Census?

Thank you for your reply.

Apparently Lismore Workhouse closed between 1919 and 1923.

I've searched the 1911 census under Matthew Burkey and Matthew Hickey in the Waterford county area but cannot find him.

Have you obtained his marriage certificate?

Just to put the cat amount the pigeons look at this

Matthew Walsh 1911 Census

In Cappoquin area where you grandfather eventually worked?

I cant find any Matthew Burke or Hickey either the right age or area.

Also how do you know the birth certificate for Matthew Burke is the right one?

Hmmm....
I had already seen that census and it did register, but I can't work out the 'Walsh' surname.

I do have the marriage certificate and will dig it out for further enquiries.

Thanks very much for your interest.

Hi

Just seen your post, my Grandmother was also born in Lismore workhouse but a little earlier in 1897, did you have any luck finding any more information? My Mum was not aware that her mother had been born in the workhouse and would like to find out a little more if possible.

Thanks
