Is Molly short for something?

I am just searching for the daughters of my 2x great uncle.

One was called Molly and the other Eileen.

Is Molly short for something?

Hi

It's sometimes used instead of Mary, and I think there are others

I believe it can also be a short for Margaret.

I was just wondering what name I should search under.

She may just be Molly.

I'll see what I can find.

She's just Molly :)

I didn't find her sister Eileen but there was something odd on Freebmd.

There is a Patricia Hartley in Burnley with a mother's maiden name of Stanworth.

This is the same maiden name of Molly's mother.

Gibby I've just looked at FreeBMD, putting in the surnames you mention, but no dates - there are three results in two districts, so their may well be two families with the same surname combination. FreeBMD is incomplete - so it may well be that the other daughter's birth has not yet been entered on the database - you could try YorkshireBMD which may have them.

As far as I'm aware Polly is the accepted short-form for Mary.  I've got one in my family, and I asked a lady I know as "Polly" what her name was, and she confirmed "Mary".  Can't help on the Molly angle, I'm afraid, although I always think of it as being Scottish - OK shoot me down in flames over that one!  :)
