1871 Help Please.
« on: Friday 25 December 09 08:51 GMT (UK) »
HI
I have "lost" John Thomas Shipman born April 1854 at Broughton Lincs. (Birth cert info)  I looked sometime ago but now know that it is possible he had enlisted in the 15th Yorks Regiment by 1871 and may have been at Aldershot or Guernsey.

He may state his birthplace as Brigg or Scawby where his grandmother and mother respectively lived.

I have also found the name ShipTON instead of ShipMAN in case that helps!

Our Heritage Library is closed for the Hols and curiosity is killing me!

Merry Christmas everyone - ours is almost over for another year! :(

I expect you know that by 1871 his Mother Mary had remarried to a Vickers, and were living in Brawby?

I noticed that John T age 6, is the oldest in the 1861 census, with sisters Ann and Christiana.

In 1871, shown as stepkids, are a George, aged 15, and Christiana again - as well as younger Shipmans born after 1861.

Wondering where George sprang from and if in fact he is actually John?

Added: Altho' he may be the George W Shipman, living with his Grandmother Catherine Good in the 1861 census ?

Hi Mort
Yes thank you I have Mary Ann's 2nd marriage, George is indeed living with grandma Good in 1861.

Briefly Mary Ann Good married William Shipman in 1851. William disappears after the birth of John T and George in 1856  hence the kids were farmed out to others.

I tracked them all except John T in 1871. Sometime between Sept 1877 when he was Informant at Grandma Good's death and January 1880 he emigrated to NZ.

I simply couldn't find JOHN T in 1871 but I have photo of him in Military  uniform  aged 15-18 so am sure he wil be somewhere in  camp or o/seas in 1871.
George W & Ann emigrated  as well. Definitely 3 persons.
Thanks
Dale

HI
Sorry if I confused you!  I have almost everything I need about this family - I just couldn't find John T in 1871 and hoped another pair of eyes might spot what I had missed!
Thanks
Dale
