1881 duplicate entry - WATSON???
« on: Friday 25 December 09 18:59 GMT (UK) »
Is this Edmund WATSON aged 84 b. Buxted Sussex the same one in two places???

At Five Ash Down, Buxted he appears as a visitor to Elizabeth OLIVE household, as a former labourer (parish pauper).

At White Hart, Buxted Street, Buxted he appears as a boarder to the STARR household (no occupation listed)

If he was a parish pauper how did he afford board n lodgings at the White Hart???

plimmerian - yes it looks very much as though Edmund has been entered twice in 1881.

In one entry he is visiting Elizabeth Olive described as "of private means".  Of Edmund himself parish pauper has actually been crossed out and formerly ag labr written in underneath.
The entry at the White Hart is very similar, again pauper has been crossed out and almsman written in  :-\

Ten years earlier in 1871 Edmund is with the same lady, Elizabeth Olive, and is described as Uncle
I'd say he was visiting his neice on the day in 1881 that she filled the form in and she added his name, maybe he was staying overnight...the landlady of the White Hart knowing him to be a boarder perhaps expected him home and added him to her scedule too  :D not uncommon to see someone appear twice.

As for how did he afford lodgings, maybe he did a few odd jobs about the place , potman maybe.  The White Hart employed an Ostler and a general domestic so looks as though it could be quite a busy place.

Hope this helps
Suey

Ah! Thanks Suey - that makes more sense - those details were not listed on the familysearch.org website!

I wonder why both households thought he was a pauper if later crossed out and other details added

Then I thought if in care of an "alms" - why he lodging in a pub?!?

Is there a point I'm missing! lol

Perhaps too much sherry!

 :-\

hope you had a great festive time!

Ian.

Hi Ian, yes! had a great day yesterday, thank you :D

Thats the benefit of being able to look at the actual images they will often show something not included on a transcription.
I agree it does seem odd that both show pauper crossed through :-\ one could speculate all day...

I don't think being in receipt of alms means that someone had to live in an almshouse as such - I think it's another way of saying 'parish relief'.
Although I beleive Alms were volantary contributions from those more well off.

Someone will put us right with a better description I suspect  ;)
