Looking for Charles Bureau, born Quebec +/- 1823
« Reply #9 on: Friday 11 March 11 13:01 GMT (UK) »
Thank you Paula.  I am now looking for Charles Bureau, born Quebec about 1823, married Jane Jones 1850. I am hoping "andipandi" gets in touch as they probably have certificates etc.   I have found out more about my ancestors from this website today than I have through other sources in the past 6 years!
Thanks to all who contribute their time and expertise
Bureau, Charles Abraham,  c1854
Griffiths, Margaret, c1864
Bureau, Tommy, born 1900
Melton, Ethel, born 1901

If you need anything on the Byles line, just let me know.
This is a crackin' good site, I've had a lot of help from it myself.

Hello Bureau

And welcome to Rootschat.

I have found the baptism of a Charles Bureau , which took place at the Church of St Augustin Des Maures, Quebec in 1824.....

It is in French, which I do not understand ! But I can make out that the Parents were Joseph and Magdaleine, nee Fiset . When my husband get home, I will get him to try and translate it......

I think you will find this is the best genealogical site there is. Without the wonderful people on here, I don't think I would ever have got going !

JeannieR
PS. I have just found the marriage of Joseph Bureau and Marie Magdaleine Fiset.
It took place in 1815 at the same Church

Hello Jeannie

This is excellent infomation, thank you.  I hope that these are my relatives, with so many names the same, and Bureau being a common name (although we never thought so until we started looking into our family tree!) one cannot always be sure.

I am looking forward to hearing from you if you can get a translation.

Oh don't say the Baylis/Byles/Boyles are at it again....

Valentine John  B was the brother on my Mary Ann B
Father Samuel Byles, baptised 27 Feb 1778 in Portsea
Samuel's Mother was Martha Bassett, baptised 14 Apr 1746 in Portsea
and here comes an interesting bit...
Martha's Father was ABRAHAM Bassett who married Mary Symonds 30 Jul 1745 in Portsea.....So Abraham was a family name.

Then there came an unexpected twist for me....
In the 1881 census you have
Sister-in-Law: Mary JOHN 63,  b Cafforn? Pembrokeshire
Grand-dau: Bessie REES 3, Scholar, b Neyland, Pembrokeshire

One of my brick walls is a family called JOHN from Pembroke...
1841 census NEYLAND Pembroke
David John 60
Sarah John 60
Martha 20
Pressilea 17
James 14

Sorry I can't help you in any way, but I shall be keeping a watchful eye on this thread, to be sure
FreeBMD has no BUREAU  BMD's  in all Kent 1850 to 1901.

There is only:
Charles Abraham BUREAN
BIRTH: Dec Qtr 1852 - Sheppey - 2a, 549

Which is most likely to be birth of the Charles Abraham BUREAU who later married Margaret GRIFFITH and settled in Aberdare, Glam. (Sheerness is within the Sheppey Reg.district)

My guess this is the same Charles BUREAU of the 1881 Census - perhaps William MATTHEWS the head of the house, filled out Charles' and took a bit of a guess on a couple of points (age and pob)

The 1883 marriage cert. of Charles A and Margaret, plus the 1852 birth cert. may both be needed to try clear up a couple of points:
* To confirm & compare a father's name & occupation on both, if it's recorded.
* For the mother's name on the birth cert.
* For the occupation of Charles A on the marriage - if he was still a Baker, it will tie in to the 1881 Census.

There is this interesting 1851 entry:
1851: 23 Daniel Street - Portsea, Hampshire
HO107/ Piece: 1658/ Folio: 402/ Page: 7/
Head: Charles BUREAU 28,  Seaman R.N. ,  b Quebec, British Subject
Wife: Jane BUREAU 25, b Pembroke, Wales

and a FreeBMD entry:
MARRIAGE  Sep Qtr 1850, Portsea Island  Vol 7, page 192
Charles BUREAU or BUREAN and Jane JONES on the same page

For what it's worth, I think the 1881 and the 1891/1901 Charles are the same person and, I strongly suspect a Services connection whereby Charles' father was in the Army/Navy stationed in Sheerness at the time of Charles' birth.  And that the family may then have moved out of the UK  while the father was stationed or living  abroad, explaining a lack of evidence of the family in the 1861 & 1871 Census.

Cheers
AMBLY

Hi, I’m also on the trail of Charles Bureau’s Quebec origins. Jeannie R mentioned a birth certificate, just wondering if there was any confirmation of this being the Charles Bureau we are looking for?
Many thanks to everyone for sharing so much information  :)

I concur with the research. Valentine John was my great great grandfather. I've never been able to find out anything more about what happened to Jane's first hubby, C S Bureau/Burean. Complete mystery. To PaulaToo, yes please, I would be very interested in Ann Billinger's ancestors

Hi to everyone who’s been on the trail of Charles Bureau father of Charles Abraham Bureau.
Just putting a note here as progress has been made! Clare & I were lucky enough to have met several clever & kind people who were able to point us in the right direction.
Here’s a link to the thread, it’s a long one with plenty of twists & turns along the way, so do read to the end.

We would now like to know more about Charles’ wife Janes’s ancestry, if anyone has made any headway on this we’d love to hear from you.
