Frains, Faulkner, Carty of Ballaghaderreen
« on: Friday 01 January 10 16:42 GMT (UK) »
My g grandfather was Dominick Frain b c 1847. He had siblings Margaret who married Michael Freyne, Bridget who married John Parsons, Catherine who married Thomas Cawley, Michael who married Mary Kerrane - I can follow all these. But a brother James who is supposed to have married Anne Faulkner and Mary who married Philip Carty have disappeared without trace. can anyone help. there are no baptism or marriage records it seems complicated by the popular names James and Mary and the number of ways one can spell Frain

Many thanks Angela Frain

Do you know the names of his children and what became of them? My grandfather, Thomas Joseph Frain, MAY have been one of Dominick's sons. He was born, I believe, in 1877, and christened in Tobercurry. He was in the U.S. by 1896 and joined the army in time to fight in the Spanish American War. Fortunately, the war ended before he made it to the Philippines. He served long enough to get a veteran's funeral and is buried at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

As unpopular as the Irish were then, he claimed all his life to have been born in America. I spent a lot of time and effort looking for him in Connecticut, only to find it was not the same Thomas Joseph Frain. Crap.

I've heard since that his father was Dominick and his mother was Mary Roper. I heard he had brothers named Martin and Dominick, and likely he also had sisters. They're all dead by now, so I have no way to know for sure. Is there a chance that your Dominick might be my GGrandfather?

Hopefully Angela's email hasn't changed and she will get a notification of your post but in the meantime I was having a look.
I can see a possible marriage of a Dominick Frain and Mary Roper in Tobercurry/Tubbercurry in 1877

And a birth for Martin and several girls but I don't see a Dominick birth, there is a Thomas in 1882
