I'm exceedingly grateful for your excellent research, and  the generous expenditure of your time!

I've had a hunt for Craike people further up the tree, but have had no luck so far.

I have found a Thomas MacDougall and Ann Ingles who seem to be appropriate parents for William, c 8 Jun 1777 [IGI Batch C117972]

Just putting up the link to inept's Scottish post to keep responses linked  :) Steve has now found Thomas Snr's death entry in Scotland and been able to confirm Thomas' parents.
