1879 newspaper advice - COMPLETED

From information in the Marloes burial register there is a drowning which I would like to investigate further.   I'm hoping it might have been reported in a local newspaper and wonder if anyone can suggest a title.

Diana, I am not well versed in Welsh genealogy and how to hunt things down in Wales.  However maybe if you goo**led Pemrokeshire newspapers  and the time fram you are interested you might get some leads on the names of the local papers.

I have tried looking on the internet but I have no idea if such an event would have been reported and if so which would be the likeliest paper to carry such a local story.

Local papers tend to carry local stories which a drowning would be.

Maybe , if you've had no luck looking for papers, you could email the library closest to where the drowning occured and ask them the name of the local aper back then.

I do vasts amount of newspaper research in relation to my Pembrokeshire Military Database and my talks around Pembrokeshire on headstones.
Pre Boer War, it is very hit and miss, I have some absolutely fasinating stories from the 1860's which form part of my talk and received much column inches, the gentleman concerned was not even from Pembrokeshire, but there are others just as interesting that do not get a mention.
Next problem is that newspapers at this time are editions to set area's many of which editions do not survive, people would not understand today just how much is in one district paper and gets no mention else where in the same newspaper in a different part of the county, but other stories of very limited interest appear in all edtitions.
Lastly most papers at this time contain mainly adverts, but you can find a list of visitors to a town how long they stay and where. Obits are rare and B/M/D are even rarer.
As you are are up the Smoke, then you have one up on me, since you have Collingdales, which believe it or not has more newpapers of Pembrokeshire than we have here.

Many thanks for your reply.   It's because I am thinking of going to Colindale that I was asking for advice.   Looking at their website they only seem to have the Western Mail and The Welshman that go back far enough.   I rather suspect they won't be local enough, but you never know until you try!

No, there are several local Pembrokeshire newspapers for this period at Colindale.

Click on http://catalogue.bl.uk/F/?func=file&file_name=login-bl-list for their full catalogue;

Then click on "Search The Newspaper Catalogue Subset"

Then type in the major town closest to Marloes - Haverfordwest or Milford Haven as examples. The results will show you the available newspapers covering which periods of time eg Pembrokeshire Herald, Havefordwest and Milford Haven Telegraph etc.

Click on the name of the relevant newspaper and then scroll towards the bottom of the page looking for the field called "Shelfmark". This will show you what years are available and what years may be unfit for use. Most of the Pembrokeshire papers have been microfilmed.

Once you have worked out what is available, I'd recommend that you give the Newspaper Library a call to confirm what ID you'll need to take with you to get a ticket AND also to check how to order items in advance of your visit. This is especially useful as they can take up to 50 mins or so to deliver your order on the day. If you order in advance, it may be sitting there waiting for you.
