Apart from looking at the above links, which you probably have also done, I went back to your mail and tried saying "Vorsch..." out loud and came up with "Warschau" (German spelling), i.e. Warsaw. Warszawa (Polish).

Maybe too big a coincidence. Have you no other clues as to names, etc. which might help?

Yes Warsaw is definitely a possiblity.  As SwissGill says, in german it's spelt Warschau, which is pronounced Var-show (var as in jar, show as in [rain] shower).
So if the "a" is flattened a bit it could sound like Vor-show or Vorsh(mumble), if you swallow the ending .

Given that there's not a V - how about Lodz?

(Pronounced woodge, I believe).

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Thanks for the replies all,

I have spoken to my boss today and he says it was a large town near Warsaw from what he can remember being told and it is possible it was Warsaw.

What he knows for fact is that his father was transported through Siberia, the Middle East and ended up in Italy where he fought with the Polish at Monte Cassino...he then trained and joined the British Army until he was injured.

His Father was just 14 when he was transported to Siberia; he was seperated from his parents at some point when the invasion began and he never saw them or his siblings again.

Apparently the family were rather well off, as my bosses Grandfather owned a Shoe Factory.

The family were Catholic and the surname is not of Polish but German origin and to date only 440 people in Poland have that surname.

I have managed to find the record for British Citizenship in the London Gazette but nothing much else...could anyone suggest where next to look??

Kind Regards

Colleen

this suggests that a naturalisation certificate might be available.

Sometimes it's worth getting these papers, sometimes it isn't. See some topics here for members' experiences with this: Topic: RootsChat Topics - Naturalisation and Internment

Hi Colleen,

have you checked films from the Mormons? There are quite a few things available. In German and Polish mostly.
