One of many links I'm sure that describes the evolution of Federtion in 1901

The six colonies had autonomy but they under overall Brihtish rule.

Tasmania (Van Diemans land ) was not a part of Victoria (Port Phillip)

A bit of a cross over there Cando.

I also have suggested some reading of "certificate information" for Lloyd before he perhaps downloads .

Have the data on James winfield Jordan now, he was born Galway Ireland c 1836 date calculated from Death cert which says age 72 at death in NZ on 8 april 1907 Says he was 22 when he married ellen britten  in Victoria,
which is the data I have that he married in 1858.

cert says that he had resided in New Zealand for 27 yrs at time of his death, so that would be c1880 that he and family came to NZ.

Now I am looking to find if he came to Australia by himself or with family or was transported and when.

His parents are listed as John Jordan [ a storekeeper] and Maria Jordan nee Kelly

Well it looks like your James Winfield Jordan emigrated to Aus with his parents...  :D

Here is his mother's death in Victoria.

JORDAN Maria age 71 yrs died 1887 at Beechworth Hospital #9148
Father: Kelly Jno
Mother: Mary MIEKLE

If you purchase & download a copy of her death certificate it will give you further information about the family, such as how long they had been here, his siblings, whether his father was living or deceased & where his mother is buried, which more than likely will be Beechworth Cemetery.
