Seeking descendants of Mary & Joseph H THOMAS
« on: Sunday 17 January 10 07:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

Seeking descendants of Mary OPRA, born c1835, Whitehaven, Cumberland, England who married Joseph H THOMAS, born c1830, Truro, Cornwall, England.

From 1871 UK Census we know Mary OPRA was married to Joseph THOMAS & the family lived in Cornwall, England........

> > Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
> > THOMAS Joseph H Head M M 41 Butcher Cornwall - Truro
> > THOMAS Mary Wife M F 36 Butcher's Wife Cumberland - Whitehaven
> > THOMAS Joseph Son U M 10 Scholar Overseas - British - Australia Sydney
> > THOMAS Richmond Son - M 7 Scholar Overseas - British - Australia, Balmain, Sydney, NSW.
> > THOMAS Jane Dau - F 5 Scholar Overseas - British - Australia, Balmain, Sydney, NSW.
> > THOMAS Florence Dau - F 2 Overseas - British - Australia, Balmain, Sydney, NSW.
> > THOMAS John S Son - M 4m Cornwall - Truro

The family is also in 1881 UK Census with 2 more children Eliza Hick & Catherine Carter THOMAS. Census place Cumberland. I suspect they moved
from Cornwall to Cumberland to be near Mary's side of the family.

In 1882, the family with the exception of Joseph (son) move once again to Sydney, NSW, Australia.

We have lost track of everyone except Florence THOMAS since 2nd move to Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1882.

Any assistance will be appreciated.

In 1930 Richmond THOMAS, handy man, was at 5 Farleigh St, Ashfield, NSW.
No other THOMAS 's listed at that address.

1933, 1936, 1937, 1943, & 1949 sees Richmond THOMAS, retired, at 9 Crescent St, Balmain East, NSW.

It was easy to track Richmond because of his unusual given name. The others would be near impossible to track on electoral rolls.

Hi,

As Jenn has suggested - take a look at the Cornwall board where you will find a great Country to research - take a look at our links, free census etc.

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,338.0.html

Joseph is listed as aged 24 at immigration parents Joshua and Eliza - both dead. He was of St Clement. He had an Uncle Joseph HICKS in the colony living at Botany.

Joshua THOMAS - Eliza HICKS 23 Mar 1823 St Clement

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=453482&dbtype=marriages&formval=

Joseph Hicks THOMAS was baptised 18 Mar 1829 St Clement

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/moreinfo.php?ID=977245&dbtype=baptisms&formval=

You will find Joseph aged 10 in St Clement with his mother Eliza and sister Eliza in the 1841 census
