I see it as " I remain" too, but am also intrigued as to why the last paragraph is handwritten?
Perhaps it was typed at Bayliss' Solicitor's office for a fee, then the typewriter ran out of ribbon and the sender added the last bit him/herself  ;D
Did your grandfather have a relative already out in NSW in 1912?

As to its being finished by hand will remain a mystery. As far as I have managed to find out so far, there were no family members in Australia at the time.

Can it be simply that it was sent by Henry Bayliss who put his name etc at the top because there was no room at the end of letter?
The 'y's and the 'g's in the writing at the bottom and his name are very similar, although the 't's look different.
Maybe he knew your family from years before.  If he practised for 30 years he must have been in Australia by 1888 at the latest but have you found out where he originated? Maybe he was a family friend who kept in touch with the old country.
Don't give up - it's a fascinating and tantalising letter!

:) :)   A bit from me,   I think the bottom is handwritten cos you could not type any lower on an old typewriter. I do wonder why, and by whom, it was typed, as in those days a typewriter was an expensive item.
I too wonder if it was sent by the person who signed it at the top.

I would still like to know why it was folded only half an inch from the bottom if it had not been cut.

I agree with you, lookingforold, about the fold.

Also, the right edge of the letter looks rough and worn; the other three all look cleanly cut and show no signs of wear.
Best wishes, Judy :-))

I think it's clean cut on 3 sides because the edges haven't been photo'd.
It could have been folded the 1/2" from the bottom to get it in the original envelope, or by someone else in the past 98 years.
Do we know exactly what size the original is and does anyone know if envelopes back then were a standard size?

Maybe the typing stopped because the typewriter had reached its lower limit on the page. The writer then continued in longhand as it was not worth starting a new page for the little bit extra information. Just a thought
