Tindals Wynd, Dundee SORTED
« on: Friday 22 January 10 02:49 GMT (UK) »
Also seems to be spelled Tindalls Wynd, named after a prominent family of bakers who had their premises in this street.

But it doesn't seem to exist anymore. Does anyone know where it used to be?

My gggrandmother lived there at the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

Thanks,
China

Never mind, I just found it. On an old OS map, the very first grid I looked at. I couldn't believe it :o :D

It was between the High Street and Dock Street, going through what is now Caird Hall. Long gone...

Cheers,

Hi China,

The Caird Hall is still standing in Dundee City Square!!!! So is the High Street and Dock Street too.

Perhaps I'll be able to visit some day. I haven't been to many places the forebears came from.

Hi, welcome to Rootschat....mine were Patersons, and they lived at #36 and then #30. Most of those buildings were built in the mid 1600s, no water, no light, nothing more than hovels. I hope yours were able to escape :-)

Yes, lots of good stuff on Photopolis. Another good resource is the Charles Lawson Collection, he sketched a lot of the buildings before they were torn down.

Just for the benefit of those not accustomed to the Scottish usage of 'sorted'. It means fixed, mended, dealt with, adjusted, provided, agreed etc etc. A very useful word, but I've seen blank looks when it's been used this way in front of non-Scots. ;)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
