Beehive makers Welwyn 1940`s

Good afternoon...........on my Uncles RAF service records, it states that he was a wood machinist. Unfortunately the name of the employer is obscured so l am trying to find out more about it.

All that my family can tell me is that he made Beehives.

Anyone know anymore??

Hi,

I presume that being 2 years on, you have found the answer to your question. I believe they were called E.H. Taylor. I only discovered this as my inlaws have an old hive in the garage and I was thinking of starting bee-keeping. The hive is missing some parts so googled to see if there are parts around, but it seems  the company was bought out in the 80s.

The plot thickens, l have just looked again at my Uncles service records and l can definitely make out that it says....

Wood machinist    E.P.   .......the rest is obscured so not EH.

In all probability it was EH TAYLOR that he worked for making beehives before going away to war as a Lancaster Bomber rear Gunner.

They were the only makers in the area so looks confirmed.

I find that beehives made by this company are much sought after, maybe there are some out there that my Uncle made but we will never know of course.

A cul-de-sac appropriately called Honeymead now stands where the works were.

Hi, most definitely EH Taylors actually in Digswell, at one time had there own railway sidings adjacent to the works, both my grandfather and great grandfather were the sales mangers at the "beehives", my great gran had a company house left to her again in digswell. At one time employed ove 120 people, were biggest manufacturers of beekeeping equipment in europe and exported both equipment, bees and wax worldwide. Used to have to stuff envelopes every year with catalogues, write on by hand the address and lick and stick stamps for over 1000 copies in January, i have a copy of Taylors last ever catalogue which i treasure.
