Hi hereford

Mmm ... when you say these men are "mentioned" ... do you just mean their dates of death ( & birth) are noted in the bible ??

There are a few bits and pieces about each of them, in PapersPast - (I haven't explored all the items though).

Perhaps a "picture" of them can be built up from the various articles and that may give leads to where they fit in ?

Matthew POTTS

From PapersPast :

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/

"Tuapeka Times" - 10 October 1868 - DIED - page 2
---   Matthew POTTS - at his residence, Victoria Hotel, Peel Street, Lawrence.

"Tuapeka Times" - 1 May 1869 - BIRTH
---   a daughter  born to the widow of the late Matthew POTTS.
[See BDM online - 1869 - birth of Elizabeth POTTS]

Can't see a marriage in NZ for Matthew POTTS but it appears his wife was named Elizabeth (also) :

"Otago Witness" - 19 June 1890 - MARRIAGE
---   marriage of N.O. POTTS* ... eldest son of late Matthew POTTS to Agnes Porteous McLEAN only d/o Malcolm McLEAN of Lawrence.

*  N. O. POTTS is Nicholas Oliver POTTS - born (NZ) 1864.

[I wonder ... as he has the second name of "Oliver" whether Oliver DAWSON may have been his godfather ... or uncle  ??]

"Tuapeka Times" - 21 September 1871 - MARRIAGE - page 6
---   marriage of Elizabeth POTTS (possibly the widow of Matthew ?) .. to Richard WILLIAMS :

William MEDWIN - d. 1869

"Tuapeka Times" - 20 February 1869 - Advertisments P1 - Col 3
----   William MEDWIN - Proprietor of Blue Spur Hotel
(announcing hotel -  removed from Gabriel's Gully to the Spur near the schoolhouse).

"Tuapeka Times" - 24 July 1869 - "Measures not Men"
----   near the end of the column is an obituary for William MEDWIN, though says little about his background.

Archives NZ (Dunedin) hold a probate record.
