Matthew POTTS - d. 1868

Probate record at Archives NZ Dunedin :

POTTS - Mathew* - of Lawrence - licensed victualler - 1868

[ * Indexed as "Mathew" - with one "t" :]

Several adverts. at PapersPast show he was the proprietor of the Victoria Hotel at Lawrence.    His wife Elizabeth continued running this after his death.

There is also an article about the auctioning of a lot of property which belonged to Matthew POTTS (as per his will)  and this was dispersed several years after the death of Elizabeth WILLIAMS in 1888.  [Will leave you to find it.  ;) ]

Yes they are all related so the mystery of why they are in the family bible has been cleared. I even now have a photo of Mathew and Elizabeth standing outside their pub in lawrence. Which I found in the lawrence museum Plus in a book about the gold fields  thomas hinde had taken over the pub owned by william. William and mathew both died in 1869 one month apart Both women remarried. Williams widow Jane married Thomas hinde  I am still searching in books etc for info but thankyou to everyone who submitted info to me  Hereford
