charles carroll - which war memorial ?
« on: Tuesday 26 January 10 14:34 GMT (UK) »
hi there,
can anyone help with this query ?
charles carroll was born in alveley in 1897. He became an orphan at an early age and boarded with a family near monkhopton.
He enlisted in  the KSLI and was killed in action in April 1917.
He is not listed on the Alveley memorial or the one at Quatt !
Does anyone know where the memorials are in the monkhopton area and possibly know if his name is listed there ?

any help much appreciated

Do not be surprised if he is not mentioned on any local memorials

I have a relative who died 1918, and he is not on named on any of the memorials in or around his hometown of Roundhay, Leeds.  Some controversy over whether he died or not - very confusing reports.

But he died under 1 name, which was not the name he was born with!!  His name changed 3 times during his short life.
Think his mother did not want his father to find him.

Also you mention he was orphaned.  Could he be listed under another name for any odd reason.

Hi Margaret,

There is a C CARROLL listed on the Ditton Priors 1914 - 1918 War Memorial.
As you will know, Ditton isn't far from Monkhopton.
