Samuel & Elizabeth WRIGHT - Ringland & Hockering
« on: Wednesday 27 January 10 11:29 GMT (UK) »
Hello,  If anyone has access to the parish records of Ringland & Hockering could they please confirm a marriage & baptisms that appear as submitted entries on the IGI.

Samuel Wright married Elizabeth Young(s) on 25 Mar 1788 at Ringland

At Ringland they baptised Ann 1788, Lydia 1791, Thomas 1792 & buried Samuel 1792.

At Hockering they baptised Jonas 1794 buried 1795, William 1796 & Jonas Silvanus 1798

As Ringland & Hockering are not too far away from each other I assume it's the same couple.

Thanks for looking;  Regards John

Thanks Tazzie - I  forget to use FreeReg . yes the baptisms are there at Ringland & then Hockering with parents Samuel Wrght & Elizabeth Young(s).

Also the NAOMI site of Monumental Inscriptions which currently only features churchyards in Bedfordshire & Norfolk has some Wrights listed -  including William & Jonus Silvanus who are buried at Swanton Morley.

William Wright's grandson - is my materal grandfather

So Samuel Wright - is my gt-gt-gt-gt-grandfather on my mother's side.

Jonas Silvanus WRIGHT was my gt gt gt grandfather.  I am descended from his daughter Harriet Elizabeth (born 1826 Heigham) who married William TROWSE at Sparham in 1850.

Hi John,

Many thanks.  I had most of that but not the marriage at Kings Lynn.

I do have details of a gravestone inscription at Ringland:
"Elizabeth, wife of Samuel Wright late of Swanton Morley and second daughter of Anna Silvey formerly of this parish.  She departed this life May 20 1820 aged 62 years.  This humble tribute is raised to her memory by her eldest daughter Ann Wells of Leominster in the county of Hereford and by her youngest son Jonas Wright of Norwich."

I also have some gravestone inscriptions at Swanton Morley:
Samuel Wright d 27 Apr 1839 aged 78.
William Wright his son d 21 Oct 1861 aged 64.
Samuel Wright eldest son of William and Mary Wright d at Riga Russia 24 Oct 1859.
Jonas Silvanus Wright d 19 Jul 1869 aged 70.
Mary Wright d ? Jun 1863 aged 71.
Anna Wright daughter of William and Mary Wright d 19 Oct 1862 at the Earl of Clonmels Bishops Court and buried 24th at Kill Church Co Kildare Ireland.

I have not found anything about the origins of Samuel Wright senior (d 1839).  Have you found anything?

I do have information about his wife Elizabeth Youngs daughter of Richard and Ann Youngs if you are interested in that family.

Regards,
Gasometer

Thanks gasometer,  I have most of the MI details provided by a fellow Wright researcher. I have no details on the origin of Samuel Wright other than he was born 1761 somewhere in Norfolk.

His son William Wright, labourer marries Mary Ward, spinster on 18th Oct 1818 at Swanton Morely, Norfolk. Witnesses are George & Rhoda Mann. NB. George Mann marries Rhoda Jarrett at Swanton Morley on 28 Oct 1817

They had the following children.
·  Samuel Wright born 6th May 1819 Swanton Morely, All Saints, baptised 8th May & died in Riga, Latvia on 24th Oct 1859
·  George Wright born 10th July 1821 Swanton Morely, baptised 15th July 1821 & died in 1899; he was deaf & dumb from birth.
·  Anne Wright born 8th Nov 1822 Swanton Morely, baptised 10th Nov 1822, died 1862
·  Jane Wright born 30th Dec 1824 Swanton Morely, baptised 31st Dec 1824, died 1880
·  Harriet Wright baptised 24th July 1827 Swanton Morley, & also as Harriet Lewis Wright, rebaptised on 4th May 1859 (born 18/06/1832) at St Augustine, Norwich. Father William Wright, Land surveyor. She died 1900.
William Wright died 21st October 1861 at Swanton Morely, age 66.
Mary Wright died 12/6/1863 age 71

Anne Wright had son Louis/Lewis Clement Wright born 24 April 1856 at 3 Cherry Tree Court, St Botolph, Aldersgate, London. In 1861/71/81 he was living with his aunts; he is my maternal great grand-father.

Regards
John

Hi John,

I now believe Samuel WRIGHT who married Elizabeth YOUNGS was the son of Luke and Sarah WRIGHT.  Luke and Sarah had 6 children:

1.   Luke baptised 11 May 1757 at Wymondham
2.   Joseph baptised 24 Sep 1759 at Wymondham
3.   Samuel baptised 27 Sep 1761 at Carleton Forehoe
4.   Anne baptised 13 Jan 1765 at Carleton Forehoe
5.   William baptised 1 Mar 1768 at Hockering
6.   Thomas baptised 1 Jul 1771 at Hockering

Luke WRIGHT, bachelor, married Sarah HARVEY, spinster, 30 Nov 1655 at Wymondham.

I also believe Luke WRIGHT was the son of Gregory and Elizabeth WRIGHT.  Gregory and Elizabeth had 12 children:

1.   John baptised 31 Aug 1712 at Wymondham
2.   William baptised 4 Apr 1714 at Wymondham
3.   Gregory baptised 26 Jul 1716 at Wymondham
4.   Alice baptised 25 Feb 1717/8 at Wymondham and married by licence William ROGERS 15 Sep 1747 at Neatishead.
5.   Samuel baptised 21 Jun 1719 at Wymondham
6.   Elizabeth baptised 26 Sep 1720 at Wymondham
7.   Ann baptised 13 Sep 1722 and buried 16 Jul 1723 at Wymondham
8.   Catherine Ann baptised 14 Jun 1724 at Wymondham
9.   Thomas baptised 14 Feb 1725/6 at Wymondham
10.   Luke baptised 4 Mar 1727/8 at Wymondham
11.   James baptised 29 Jul and buried  6 Aug 1729 at Wymondham
12.   Mary baptised 20 Aug 1731 at Wymondham and married John AUSTIN 2 Mar 1755 at Wymondham.

Gregory was buried 25 Jan 1736/7 at Wymondham.  The will of Gregory WRIGHT of Wymondham, oatmeal man, dated 22 Jan 1736, was proved in the Norfolk Archdeaconry Court 1736/7.  The will mentions:
•   Executrix:
o   Elizabeth his wife
•   Beneficiaries:
o   Elizabeth his wife: Real estate for life; Personal estate for life
o   John WRIGHT his son: £10
o   William WRIGHT his son: £10
o   Alice WRIGHT his daughter: £5
o   All his children: equal shares of residue
•   Real estate:
o   Messuages, lands and tenements in Wymondham to be sold by John and William his sons after the death of his wife.

Elizabeth was buried 17 Oct 1759 at Wymondham.  The will of Elizabeth WRIGHT of Wymondham, widow, dated 16 Jun 1759, was proved in the Norfolk Archdeaconry Court 10 Mar 1760.  The will mentions:
•   Executrices:
o   Alice ROGERS her daughter
o   Catherine Ann WRIGHT her daughter
•   Beneficiaries:
o   Thomas WRIGHT her son: £5
o   Alice her daughter, wife of William ROGERS: 1/3 of residue
o   Catherine Ann WRIGHT her daughter: 1/3 of residue
o   Mary her daughter, wife of John AUSTIN: 1/3 of residue

Gregory WRIGHT, bachelor, married Elizabeth MAIDSTONE, spinster, 3 Oct 1711 at Wymondham.

I believe Gregory WRIGHT was the son of William and Easter WRIGHT.  William and Easter had 4 children:

1.   Isaac baptised 6 Jul 1683 at Hingham
2.   Gregory (see below) baptised 20 Mar 1686/7 at Hingham
3.   Alice baptised Dec 1670 at Hingham
4.   Eliza baptised 13 Oct 1695 at Hingham

William was buried 28 Apr 1706 at Wymondham.  Administration of his estate was granted 6 Jul 1706 to Gregory WRIGHT of Wymondham, oatmeal maker, his natural and lawful son, by the Norfolk Archdeaconry Court.

Easter was buried 24 Dec 1710 at Hingham.

Hello again Gasometer....

Thanks for all that detail, you have been busy over the past years....

Looking back at your previous reply I noticed a reference to Leominster in Hereford...

So Ann Wright born 1788 becomes Mrs Wells & goes off to Hereford....
Have you got any info on her marriage & then her death....
It's interesting that in both the wills of Jane Elliot (ne Wright) 1880 and Harriet Lewis Tewsley (ne Wright) 1900, daughters of William Wright 1795 (brother of Ann) they both bequeath 'interest in a freehold piece of land & orchard, Passway Field, Leominster' and 'freehold premises 28 Etnam Street, Leominster' .
I haven't had, until now, an inkling as to a link to Leominster... but I might be straw clutching

Any ideas

Regards
John
