Thanks everyone for your contributions. Great work.
I've had a look on BMDs and find a marriage of Aaron Maddocks in June 1851 Liverpool district Vol 20 Page 356 to either Sarah Bellis, Ann Jones, Sarah Mooney and Caroline Mullagon. But I also found a marriage in March 1847 Liverpool district of a Aaron Maddocks to a Mary Bellis, Mary Bloomfield, Priscilla Roberts or Mary Whitworth. I wondered whether he married Mary Bellis in 1847, she then died (I found a 2 possible death records in Liverpool - March 1848 and Dec 1849, Vol 20 Pages 220 & 436) then he married her sister Sarah Bellis in June 1851. He was listed as a widower in the 1851 census because the census was taken before he got married. Does this sound plausible?

Hello again,

I have tried to find Aaron Maddocks senior in a later census but haven't succeeded as yet. This would give an idea as to which lady he married if this is the same person.

There is a death for an Aaron Maddocks in Great Boughton, Chester in 1863. Bretton would have been in this registration district then. The death certificate might give you some clues, who reported the death and his address etc.

The thing that worries me about the marriage(s) in Liverpool is that Aaron junior was born in Bretton in 1854. It is possible but somehow doesn't look right.

The 1851 census would have been taken prior to the marriage in 1851.

The Bellis name is common in that part of Flintshire even to this day. Had he married locally I would be more inclined to accept this.

What you will need to do is to obtain his (probable) marriage and death certificates and find him in a later census. An alternative would be for someone to look up his burial, if he was still in Bretton then I would expect it to be in Broughton, St Mary.

The IGI has an entry for a baptism of Aaron MADOX in Hawarden on 04/10/1808. He was born 29/02/1808, son of Aaron MADOX and Elizabeth REYNOLDS.

The year of birth and the name of his mother fit with the 1851 census entry shown before.

The 2 marriages for an Aaron Maddocks in Liverpool are shown on the IGI too.

It might be an idea to put a post on the Merseyside/Liverpool Board on Roots Chat to see if anyone can do a look up for the marriage. This would give you more information and avoid the costs of certificates in case they prove to be someone else.

I was given the information below:-

From the BVRI Marriages :

28th April,1851 St. Silas, Liverpool
Aaron Maddocks to Sarah Bellis
Husband previously married
His father Aaron Maddocks
Her father Robert Bellis

No ages stated.

No mention of a first marriage.  Do you think this is sufficient to prove that this is my Aaron Maddocks (father Aaron)?  Perhaps if we could find a Robert Bellis with daughter Sarah there might be a link to Wales?
