Daniel and Janet Kane

Hello Claire - last 6 credits used and no joy.  In all of Scotland in 1867 there were only 2 William Kanes born.

I went and checked the first.  Not him.  father Robert Kane and mother Mary Kane (Miss Shields).  Had a look for Grace earlier only Grace I can see remotely close was born in 1871.

There is a William Cain born in Kilbirnie on 11th March 1866 showing on IGI
parents listed as William Cain and Jean Orr -

There was also William Thomson Kane showing on Scottish People born in 1866 in Monkton & Prestwick, Ayr might be worth checking just in case.

There is a Kane family in Kilbirnie in the 1841 FreeCen census, of whom all by the youngest children were born in Ireland. Many of the Kanes in the census are Irish.

Grace Mckay Kane born 1871 has parents William Kane and Helen Bulloch.

From NZ bmd online the most likely looking entries:

Janet Kane Death 1910 aged 76y
Daniel Kane Death 1915 aged 85y
William Kane Death 1912 aged 45y

Grace Kane married Andrew Ronaldson Cunningham 1893
Grace Cunningham Death 1937 aged 64y

This Grace had 8 children, with an interesting variety of middle names. Maybe some of them are from the Kane side?

There are two marriage entries showing,

DANIEL MCCAIN and JANET KERR: 16 FEB 1855 Straiton, Ayr and also 02 FEB 1855 Dalry, Ayr

You would think it is for the same couple. Both are available to view on SP. 1855 is the first year of official registration in Scotland and the certificates for that year only included lots of additional information as the entries ran over two pages of the register.

Well wow, what a lot to take in, thank you all very much for your searching.

I have a feeling that the last entry might be my connection, I have Daniel McCain and Janet Kerr, i say this due to the fact that ihave a probable grandson of theirs with Kerr as a middlename.  Now to work out which marriage...............

I have managed to find some of the children of Janet and Daniel (Kane) McCain through school records, and quite a lot have Kerr as a middle name which i understand is a Scottish tradition using a mothers maiden name (let me know if i am wrong). 

The one child i am trying to connect to this family is a Janet Kane b.1876 (no middle name of course) who married a David Neil in 1899 Dunedin, NZ.  It is their son who is the possible grandson of Janet Kerr? and Daniel McCain.

It seems to have been a popular thing to change your surname here or even the spelling of it, i do wonder why this family might of done this due to there living in one of the Scottish areas of NZ.

Once again many thanks to everyone for there help, i think i will have to get a marriage printout of my Janet Kane & David Neil's marriage.

I think you are right about that family in the 1871 census, especially as Andrew Kerr McCain (b 1861 Dalry to Daniel McCain and Janet Kerr) seems to father children in NZ in 1902 and 1904.
(You may have this already)


Daniel and Janet did have a child Hugh Kerr Cain born 1876 in NZ according to the NZ Historical BMD records.

Grace's Birth certificate should give quite a bit of information as it was an 1855 big one.
