Where is she buried?
« on: Tuesday 02 February 10 10:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have almost knocked the last brick out of my brickwall now.  I have been looking for the whereabouts of a missing ancestor for sometime and thanks to the help of many people - especially other RCs I have finally located her death certificate.

It would appear that she died in hospital in Sychem Lane in Tunbridge.  Now I just need to find out where she would have been buried.

She came from Hoo and I am almost certain she wasnt buried there.  The family were very poor and it looks as if she was transferred from the workhouse to the isolation hospital when she became ill.  It is also very unlikely she would have a headstone.

Can anyone suggest which cemetery records I could start with (she died in 1899).  I have tried deceased online but unfortunately no luck.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I have no idea where Tunbridge is but, I imagine she wouldn't be buried far from where she died.
So burial records from that and surounding parishes would be a start.
Good luck,
Leonie.

I dont know if this site will help at all:

I think Tunbridge is actually Royal Tunbridge Wells, not to be confused with Tonbridge.

sychem lane is located in the village of five oak green, tonbridge, the only mention of a hospital there was a disused pub converted and renamed the hoppers (hop picking) hospital, this later became a retreat for pore families from london.

Hi Anne Marie, Tunbridge is the old name for Tonbridge it was changed in 1890 to avoid confusion with Tunbridge Wells, there was an isolation hospital in Vauxhall Wood, Tonbridge, opened in 1879 and closed in 1933, there are several churchyards close to the area, one at Capel, one at Hadlow and one at Tudeley and the Tonbridge Cemetary in Shipbourne Lane.
The 'Little Hoppers Hospital' building is I think still on the East Peckham Road but no longer used as a hospital.
Feel free to alter/modify or colour any restores done by me.

Hi

Thank you for your reply.  I have been trying to find out where the records are likely to be kept for the hosptial but it would appear that there is more than one hospital in question.  I think I probably need to confirm exactly which hospital she was in before I go much further.

Not sure how I am going to do this as the dc simply said 'Isolation hospital'.  I did look at the 1901 for the superintendant who registered her birth.  In 1901 he was at the hospital for infectious diseases (assuming it was the same one) and the entries either side on the return were for 'The Alders'.  Does this help?
