Thanks Wendy, the details are much appreciated and I should be able to easily locate them in 1881 with so much information.

Cheers Roy

Hi Wendy
Seems like my last comment is a case of easier said than done.
I failed to find the family on the 1881 for South Wales & Monmouth, using all possible searches from head of the family John down to daughter Edith.  Any suggestions?

think there may be a typo in the reply as that's 1901's census judging from the RG number.

Here's the family in 1891

5 River Row, Penmaen, Mynyddislwyn RG12/4381 folio 122 pg 9
John Bennette head mar 33 coal miner b. Devon, Hemyock
Sarah wife 28 b. Devon, Halmcombe
Lucy dau 11 b. Devon, Culmstock
William son 9 b. Glam, St Nicholas
Florance dau 7 b. Somerset, Clayhidon
Walter son 5 b. Bassaleg
Harry son 2 b. Llantarnam
Edith dau 1 b. Llantarnam
Alfred son 2 months b. Blackwood

Florence shows up as born in Somerset this time, but Culmstock, Hemyock & Clayhidon all come under the same registration district of Wellington, Somerset.

As for 1881, they're pretty well hidden for the moment. Perhaps the census was taken during one of their many moves?

Hello R J
I was raised in Brithdir and still have family living there.  For the past 10 years I have researched anyone and everything with a connection to the village and I am now in the process of writing its history.  A big part of my interest are the world wars and I have researched all the names on the village cenotaph.  My main interest in your Bennett family is the son Harry; his name is remembered on the memorial and I use details from the census and local newspapers etc to add background information.  I am also a member of the Gelligaer Historical Society and we have an on-going project of researching the names on all the war memorials in the old parish to honour and remember those who gave their lives in those terrible conflicts.

Thank you for your reply.  I have had a look at the GHS and the background information that you have sourced on Harry.  You are doing a lovely thing, thank you x  Just down in Newport actually.  Lucy that you talk of is my gggrandmother.
