charlton surname
« on: Thursday 04 February 10 22:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I hope I am in the correct area of RootsChat;  on behalf of a very dear friend, I am looking for a William Charlton and his wife Mary Skatt.  We have the information that a Joseph Charlton, born in Feb 1861 at Longbenton.  Joseph's father was Thomas Charlton born 1810 at Sparrow House, Seaton Burn.  Seemingly his father was William Charlton and his mother was Mary Charlton (nee Skatt).  These are the two I am looking for.  I cannot find either William's or Mary's birth and I am assuming that William was born around the seaton burn/seghill area but as for Mary Skatt I am completely lost as I can't find any reference to a Skatt family in the area at all.  I feel that Skatt is a Scottish name so perhaps her family came from Scotland but the only reference we have to Mary is an entry on the LDS site - the entry was made by a lady in America.  Can anyone help us to find Mary Skatt born (accorinding to the LDS entry) in Northumberland, or William Charlton in the Seaton area.  Thanking everyone in anticipation.

Tricia

Hi Tricia

A couple of things to help your search.

Seaton Burn was in Longbenton parish and Seghill was in Earsdon.

I tried to find Thomas baptism in Longbenton but no success so far.  If he was born in 1810 he'd be quite old when Joseph was born, wouldn't he?

Secondly I'd be very wary of any submitted entry on LDS - extracted ones are usually OK though.

Are you sure it is not Mary Scott?

Like you, Janis, I wondered whether it was Scott - lots of them in the area.  Skatt is not a name I have come across in any of my Northumberland research - and there has been plenty  :)

I can see  certificate in the future.  I think Thomas may have been married twice.  First to an Elizabeth then to an Ann.  Just following the census.  A marriage cert would confirm his father's name.
