Ross family
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 18:39 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have recently found a Ross family in my tree. I am not familiar with the area around Kincardineshire and would welcome some help.

I have a John Ross born abt 1812 and Ancestry have the place of birth as Oter Heace??? I have him with his wife Christina and children Jemina & David in Abderdeenshire in the 1841 census Old Machar, it looks like the family are lodging in a large house with 3 other families, I then have them in 1851 in Barony Devenick, then they move to Lancashire.
I am trying to find John's birth and his marriage to Christina. But not knowing the area I do not know where to look.
I would be very grateful for nay help.
Many  thanks

Hi,

Just a few questions that might make it easier to find them.

What years roughly were his children born, and where?
The same for Christina?

Had a quick look on familysearch but cant see an obvious one for them. Scotlands people have the parish records online and also the catholic baptism records .

Hi
Many thanks for your reply

In the 1851 census on ancestry it states that Christina was born abt 1816 in Ammingston Essmongston, Aberdeen??? In 1861 Lancashire census it states that she was born in Cammingston
They have the following children:
Jemina 1832
David 1834
Barbra 1837
John 1840
Agnes 1842
Martha 1844
Ellen 1847
Francis 1848
Alexander 1853

All the children have Aberdeen as the place of birth but Alexander has Coaprslayes , Scotland???

Hi

Something strange here. The 1841 and 1851 censuses don't really match. In 1841, John was a weaver. In 1851, he's a farmer.

Children in 1851 include Barbara, aged 14 and John, aged 11 - they're not there 10 years earlier. And where are Jemima and David from the 1841?  John is aged 39 and Christian aged 33 in the 1851.

Snap - ev - I think the 1841 family is a different one.

Hi
I was just checking the census and it has the following trades for John
1851 Farmer and Plasterer
1861 Plasterer
1871 Master Plasterer employing 6 men
1881 Plasterer

So I guess I could have a look for Plasterers in Castleton, Lancashire and see if I can find anything else.

Do the place names that I have put for Christina and Alexander mean anything to you?
Many thanks
