John Heatley born Whittle le wods or was he?
« on: Saturday 06 February 10 21:00 GMT (UK) »
Ok I have traced my surgeon John Heatley back from Manchester 1851 cen to Whittle le woods 1841. He is stated as being born Whittle in 1812 on cen. I cant find him any where.

He has 2 children with second name Heys so I believe this marriage to be his parents.
John Heatley of Preston corn dealer Mary Heys L. 25 May 1809 W: Thos Gregson, Jno Talbot m Walton le dale.
just up rd from Whittle.

any ideas welcome

On IGI there is a John Heaton who married Ellen Jackson on 19 May, 1836 at St. George, Chorley.

On  1851 census he has a son Peter Ralph Heatley born in London about  1839.  Checked on FreeBMD.  There is a Peter Ralph Jackson Heatley born West London September quarter 1838.  This suggests it is probably the right family.

If John married Ellen Jackson at St. George, Chorley you should be able to go to Parish registers. Not sure if it would name his father - but worth a try.  Could be at Lancashire Records office in Preston.

Don't understand what you mean by "on cen".  Oh well, maybe it doesn't matter.

On the 1851 census, although son Henry Heys has the birthplace Whittle, the father John Heatley has the birthplace of Preston, this would match better with the parents you believe are correct.

An entry in Preston Chronicle (Preston, England), Saturday, September 26, 1840; Issue 1465. lists John Heatley of Whittle Le Woods having obtained a Game Licence for 1840.

There is a document on the National Archives Site I think it would be well worth your while investigating, so many names are ringing bells.

[W1837 H3].
Heatley v Rose. Bill and two answers.
Plaintiffs: John Heatley and wife.
Defendants: Lawrence Lucas and wife, Elizabeth Rose, Margaret Jackson, Ellen Jackson, John Crook, William Heys and John Eastwood.

Also something else of interest

Ralph Heatley of Whittle-le-Woods, John Heatley of Samlesbury, and Thomas Blacklidge of Chorley, gents. (executors of John Kemps of Sephton, gent.) to Oliver Martin of Liverpool, biscuit maker. [Lancashire Record Office, Molyneux, eams of sefton]  Date: 1772.

Seems worth a visit to the Lancashire Record Office.

He was one of hundreds obtaining a game licence, nothing special about it except the confirmation of where he was living.

Don't forget that the LRO are open until 20:30 on Tuesdays. Later than most supermarkets!
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
