Elizabeth Hogg LookUp
« on: Sunday 07 February 10 11:43 GMT (UK) »
I am looking at a Marriage of

HOGG Elizabeth to
GARDNER Samuel

Painswick Gloucestshire 6 December 1831

I am trying to confirm Elizabeth's Father's name as I believe to be James Hogg (The ettrick Shephard)

Is there an easy way to look at marriages for this area and would it have the father listed on the marriage.

Cheran ???

Cheran,

The GFHS produce a CD showing marriages in GLS 1800 to 1837.

One would imagine that your answer would be for you to obtain and search the CD but I would not be breaching the GFHS licence agreement to let you know that Elizabeth's  marriage is not to be found on it.

It appears that you obtained the marriage info from the IGI BUT alas, it's a submitted entry so untrustworthy and, if one accepts the GFHS non-marriage info., it seems to be a fairytale regarding location and most likely, date.

You could have a look at Painswick extracted info via http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(N-Z).htm#P but the marriages end at 1830 :'(

Church records give the father's name for baptisms;  sometimes plus the mother's name except for bastard children when only the mother's name would be given. Quite often the father's surname is converted to a forename (Like Nelson after the battle of Trafalgar not, of course that H.N. was the father of a base born child!).  However, many double barrelled surnames started life that way!.

Marriages given in PR's never give the father's name.

Regards

Chas

What is Elizabeths year of birth and place of birth on the 1851 Census?

If she was born c 1810 then there are these 2 extracted christenings that are possibles/

Elizabeth HOGG, 21 April 1809, Ebley Chapel, Randwick, Gloucester
Parents JAMES Hogg and SUSANNA

Elizabeth HOGG, 01 June 1809, Stroud, Gloucester
Parents, James HOGG and Elizabeth HEWLETT

Chas I beg to differ! - the marriage is indeed on the CD, but as you rightly say father's name was not included on the parish record prior to 1837.  The only hope would be if he was one of the witnesses.

Gloucestershire Archives hold the records on microfiche.

James HOGG, Ettrick Shepherd-Poet

Born 1770, To Robert Hogg and Margaret Laidlaw
He married Margaret Phillips, 20 April 1820, Selkirk, Scotland
Children of Robert/Margaret all born Selkirk;
James Robert Hogg, 28 April 1821
Janet Phillips Hogg, 09 June 1823
Margaret Lydia Hogg, 18 January 1825
Harriott Sidney Hogg, 18 December 1827
Mary Gray Hogg, 21 August 1831

So not looking likely Elizabeth was one of his children.

Trish

Elizabeth died 1939 and was buried in Painswick - Samuel is on 1841 census as widow with their only surving daughter, Georgina.

I have also found that the Ettrick Sheppard had up to 5 Children that were born before he married Margaret Phillips and one was an Elizabeth born in 1810.

Thanks for the other names - I will have to follow up but I think the stumbling block will be not having the Father's name on their marriage.  I will keep trying though.

Hi Cheran,
I see now your problem.
So was she born Gloucestershire?Or Scotland?

Hopefully someone can find extra info on the Marriage Record of Elizabeth and Samuel for you.

Cheran,

The marriage you found for Elizabeth H in 1831 is a submitted entry in the IGI and as such is unreliable regarding some, if not all, of its details.

At http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hogg/jameshogg.html there is information about James Hogg.  It does not mention any child of his named Elizabeth so although the Painswick Elizabeth might have had a father named James, he was not known as The Ettrick Shepherd.  Had James had another child, no doubt the fact would be well known by researchers in Scotland.

Regards

Chas
