Looking for Gregg in Bellaghy
« on: Monday 08 February 10 00:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am lookin for anyone with a connection to a Clarke Gregg he was in Bellaghy in the 1830 and I believe moved with his family to Belfast in the 1840's.
the 1831 census shows him as 23yrs  head of a family 5 males 7 females I have traced the following children.
John, Joseph, Jane, James

Also if anyone knows of the area in Bellaghy know as TAMYARON in the 1830's.

Many thanks
Gregg

I suspect the location you are looking for is "Tamniaran", a townland at Hillhead outside Castledawson on the road to Bellaghy.  I have relatives named Mann who lived there in the same timescale, but no Gregg connections I'm afraid.

The 1831 census information includes the religion of residents so perhaps you could trace them through church records.  You should note that for Church of Ireland records, Castledawson Parish was not formed until 1875 and earlier records for this part of the parish will be in Ballyscullion parish (Bellaghy).

Good luck in your search.

Given the Bellaghy connection the Tamniaran in Ballyscullion Parish that akanex2 mentioned earlier is more likely than the one in Dungiven parish.
Note: Tamniaran means "field of the O'Harans."
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Sorry, I am not looking for Gregg but for Johnston. but I took note of  this reply to you.

You should note that for Church of Ireland records, Castledawson Parish was not formed until 1875 and earlier records for this part of the parish will be in Ballyscullion parish (Bellaghy).

I am guessing that these records for Ballyscullion would only be found at Proni now. Is that correct? I am looking for the children of John Johnston of Hillhead, Ballyscullion, one of which is Moses in 1806. I am looking for James in 1798 and have been searching for James for over 30 years. I know his father was John and his mother Anna.
Thanks
Peggy
