What's her name!?
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 08:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi guys

I can't read Sarah's MOTHER name - is it Eliza? As in Elizabeth? The one under her fathers name Robert Gillies.

Also quick opinion - I was always told it was GILLIS & that the e was added for all the NZ offspring, is it possible that the person writing the death cert put the e in Gillis?

I see the son was present - is it H J Rutherford? Also is it saying there were 2 males & one female living with her when she died?

Hi

I cannot help with all your questions but....

Yes it does look like Eliza, but Eliza could be a name in its own right rather than be short for Elizabeth.

The 2 males and 1 female means that they were still living but not necessarily with her. Issue means the immediate descendants of a person (I think)

Evie
Booth, Hornsby, Northumberland & Durham
Jackson, Northumberland & Durham
Douthwaite, N Yorks & Durham
Geldard, N Yorks
Ward, Cheshire & W Yorks
Swallow, Boid, W Yorks
Kirby, Lowe, Studholme, Geary, Emery, Baldock

Hi both  :)

I too read her name as Eliza Gillies formerly Black

Initials are always the hardest bit. I'd say the son's first initial is W - not sure about the middle initial. Looks like T at first sight but the other Ts are a bit different unfortunately - as is the J in James  :-\

I agree with 2 sons living, 31 and 34 years; 1 female 26 years

I agree with Evie's and Tati's points and I also think the surname is spelt Gillies, which could have been as it was spelt out to the registrar or as the registrar thought it should be spelt.
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester

Thanks guys - actually I think your right, it is Eliza - I just noticed Sarah named one of her children Eliza Ann Rutherford so that's most likely :-)
