Prussia (Germany / Poland): Seeking von Harder/ Berg connections
« on: Tuesday 09 February 10 15:44 GMT (UK) »
My G/Grandfather Robert Rudolp Wilhelm von Harder was born in 1845, in Poznan, (Now Poland) he came to the UK in his early 20's where he met and married Anna Mary Marguerite Berg in London, on the 21 Sept 1872 Have traced her family back to 1740 at Langendiebach, Germany.
I have a good deal of info on the UK branch, but would be interested to find out more about the German connection?

Hi Matrix

You did not say what was the name of Robert's father from the marriage certificate.

Have you seen this website?  http://bindweed.man.poznan.pl/posen/search.php

This is a site devoted to marriages in the Poznan region between c1820-1889, both Catholic and Protestant.  Poznan is/was a city and also the name of a larger region, like Greater London.  So people's ancestors may have said they came from Poznan, but they could have come from anywhere within the region.

Entering the surname Harder brings up a number of Harder marriages which might belong to Robert's parents.  Clicking on the parish name brings up a list of LDS (Mormon) films available to order and view at your local LDS Centre that has viewing facilities.

Kind regards
Gaie

Hi Gaie

Thanks for the info, Roberts Father's name was given as Ernst on the marriage certificate, it had come to my notice that Poznan included the town and area around, thanks again

My Auntie told me that my great great grandfather was a man named Robert Rudolph Von Harder, i typed in the name to google and saw this. I wonder how many there can be in London at that time!

Hi

It is very interesting that we might be connected, I suspect that there were not very many Robert Rudolph's around at that time, although the eldest son was given those names. I presume that if your name is not Harder you might be connected through one of the daughters Robert and his wife had thirteen children
Louisa Ann married William Giddings
Ida Emillie married Frank Arthur Bullen
The other daughters one was my Grand mother and one was a spinster.

Robert and Anna were married 21 Sept 1872

If none of this makes sense you could be connected to the eldest son who also had a large family. Let me know and I will try and fill you in.

Regards Matrix

I believed that Robert Rudolph Wilhelm von Harder, my great grandfather, emigrated to London from Poznan(Posen).
But after contacting genealogists in Poznan (with the intention of visiting and doing on the ground research) I drew a complete blank.
Further research led me to Latvia and I found that he lived in Jelgavia (near Riga), from where he emigrated to London.

My grandfather Robert von Harder operated a newsagents and tobacconists in Islington, but anti German sentiment during WW1 (broken windows etc) cause the family to drop the von.
