James Oxford died in Neath area bet. Jul–Sep 1965
« on: Wednesday 10 February 10 11:21 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to establish if the James Oxford who died in the Neath area between Jul–Sep 1965, is the same James Oxford who:
1) Was born between Oct–Dec 1894 in Wolverhampton, and/or
2) Married Martha Ward between Jul–Sep 1920 in the Neath area.
Any assistance greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi
Not sure how you can confirm all thoes thing unless there is some one out there that knew them.
Why dont you send for the marriage certificate? It may give some info you don't already know.
I can see James was 70yrs old when he died is that where you got his date of birth from?
cheers cardiff ???

Hi Cardiff

Good point about the marriage certificate. I have been collecting birth and marriage certificates for father and 2 of the other children. I should have got that one too. A case of woods and trees….. :-\

What I am really trying to establish is where and when they all died. None of their deaths appear in the usual places (e.g. Ancestry, FreeBMD). The only one close is James (based on age and process of elimination) and Neath/Aberavon is where one of his brothers was last spotted. I have joined Glamorgan FHS to see if they have any records from the local cemeteries and am approaching the Roman Catholic Church to look at their records (the family was Roman Catholic). Oh yes, they were also a fairground family……

I was hoping someone in the Glamorgan section might have come across them, which could save a lot of legwork!

Many thanks

Thanks Cardiff

Unfortunately we have no idea when they died. The three I am particularly looking for, other than James, are:

OXFORD
 Thomas William (father) b. 1851 in Wolverhampton, died before Dec.1917
 William b.1875 Wolverhampton, still alive Feb.1916, address Cinema Milford Haven
 Thomas William b.1880 Wolverhampton, cinema operator in Whayman’s cinema in FleurdeLis (nr.Blackwood) Feb 1916 when he joined the army, married Dec.1917 in Milford Haven, still alive Mar.1919 France (discharged) and gave home address in Aberavon, and probably still alive Sept.1921 (signed medal card receipt postmarked Porthcawl in his WW1 records).

I checked the 1911 Census but could not find them. The nearest is a William Oxford from Wolverhampton boarding with the Rees family at 40 Arthur St. in Aberavon. Right age for Thomas William, who sometimes called himself William (they all did apparently….).

Just saw your last message. They were a fairground family so they moved around quite a bit but William and Thomas William seem to have settled in South Wales by around WW1. Nothing to say they did not go back to the travelling life afterwards of course.

Thanks for the tip about Lincoln. The family is associated with the West Midlands and South Wales but no reason why James and perhaps some of the others would not have gone further afield.

This is more fun than crosswords and Sudoku!

Hi

My grandmother was the Martha Ward you mention - married James Oxford at St Mary's Church, Aberavon on 31 July 1920.

However, I have no details of James Oxford other than from their marriage certificate.

Can you help?

Regards

Hi
See also my reply to your other message.
James was half-brother to my Thomas William Oxford.
His father was named Thomas William Oxford. His mother was Thomas's second wife, Sarah Brennan, the sister of his first wife - their parents were James Brennan and Sarah (maiden name Flinn) from Ballymoe, Galway in Ireland.
James was born in 1894 in Wolverhampton. He died on 09 Aug 1965 in Neath General Hospital, Neath, Glamorgan. He was buried in Goytre Cemetery alongside his half-brothers William and Thomas.
Regards
Fred
