Okay I've checked the Victorian BMD and found a death for Joseph James Rowley 1855 born Tasmania - parents James Rowley and Elizabeth Selvin. Note the spelling of her surname. The BMD quotes the child as 10 years but James was in the process of transportation then so this appears incorrect. I wonder if it should say 10 months or 10 weeks?

I can't find Elizabeth as a convict so wonder if she was born in Tas. I couldn't find a marriage for them in Vic or NSW, or indeed a permission for convicts to marry in Tas.

Any ideas?

Bentley: England (Lancashire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire), Australia
McGowan: NZ, Australia
Rowley: NZ, England, Australia
Salvin: NZ, England, Australia
Von Lehenner: Germany, England

Hi Sandra

Sorry I haven't had a chance to reply till now.

Yes, I'd also found Joseph James ROWLEY on an index late last night.

Age at death is quoted as "10 Months".

[Source:  John Rowe's transcriptions of "Tasmanians who died in Victoria".]

When I first started looking at these possible ROWLEY connections for Harriet, I checked out the TAS convict links, and no, there doesn't appear to be a "permission to marry".
BUT  ... I wondered, if once a "Cert. of Freedom" was granted, permisssion needed to be sought ?
[All the hard yards for my own convict (arr. NSW), were done by a most generous RootsChatter from Sydney, so I haven't needed to explore all the "ins and outs".   My guy firstly married a fellow "con" - P.T.M. found - but there wasn't one for his 2nd marriage.]

I've got quite a lot to post re: SALVIN  ... and will do that shortly.

My feeling at the moment though, is that Elizabeth SALVIN (SELVIN), was possibly TAS born.

  ... catching up.   ;)

That's good info from Mare re: Brighton.   :)

The places around that area were seething with miners in 1866-67 due to the discovery of gold.   Charleston was "born" in Aug. 1866 - Brighton about 1867.
The registration district given for Louisa's birth, was Cobden a little way out of Greymouth ... but Cobden likely processed (at that time) all BDM registrations for areas further North.

From a transcription "Charleston - Residents from 1866", is the following listing:

ROWLEY - James - in the area in 1867 :

Tasmanian Archives Index to departures 1817-1867

No possible Salvin or Selvin.

This may suggest a marriage in TAS

Elizabeth ROWLEY left Launceston for Mlb on "Clarence" 24 Dec 1853

Adding: ship to Colony "Persian" then a note "recorded in index as having arrived aboard "Blenheim"

On the Blenheim was Corp Joseph Salvin arrived 1850, military pensioner, residing Westbuury
James ROWLEY same journey and ship but 25 April 1853

Cheers Annie

Yes, James ROWLEY (travelling Launceston / Melb.) is correct person.    We know he was transported per "Joseph Somes" arriving TAS 1846.

The "Elizabeth ROWLEY" per "Clarence" to Melb. Dec. 1853, is not though, the wife of this James.  (Elizb. ROWLEY recorded also as arrived per "Blenheim", is on "Persian" list - arrived 5 August 1827.)

:D   Well yes, all in due course ... some links already posted earlier in thread.  :)

But bear in mind this search is based on some very new developments and there is much that needs to be checked out before it can be posted here.    :D
