What relationship? If any
« on: Friday 12 February 10 21:51 GMT (UK) »
If a married woman has a child that is definitely not her husbands, his war records have survived (burnt records) and he was away in Iraq for at least a year prior to the birth, he returned uk December child born February following year.
What is he to the child, not step-father!
The child was brought up by another family, not legally adopted. Year was 1919 prior to adoption as we know it, the child (my mother) told me she was given away
How would you show this on Family Tree Maker

Thanks

Hi Steve,

I'm happy to be proved wrong, but I don't think the father is any relation to the child.

In FTM2005 there are various relationships available, including Unknown, under the People/Fix relationship menu's.

Thats the conclusion I came too, strange if she had the child prior to the marriage she would be a step daughter and he would be the step-father
Must be numerous cases like this that people are not aware of, yet in my tree the documents exist to prove it.
As far as I am aware anyone who knew the full story is now dead
The husband returned from Iraq late 1918, mother was born early 1919, three months after his return.
He died 1921, his wife never remarried.
I find it strange that if she entered into a relationship whilst he was away and fell pregnant, she never re-married after his death, dying in the 1980s
Once again thanks for the message

Biologically no relation.
Unless child was conceived when he was on a home visit ..DNA may prove or disprove that

LEGALLY he is the father ..unless stated otherwise. on birth cert ?

check baptism ...father named if known
Also check probate and will ...is the child mentioned

I would add to tree as father but put in notes as maybe not biological

#I know this is an old post but I was searching 'father from Iraq' and it came up
So I thought id add my solution to this situation

When you find birth father add as alternative father
Or put the legal husband as alternativehusband ....there is an option for this on ancestry

What did you do ?

Many cases non biological father was known as such by all concerned...even if child is brought up by others it could be for other reasons ....was he wounded or ill ?

Were the foster family related in any way ?

It's not really a relationship - it's just her mothers 1st husband (at least thats how ancestry would word it I believe)

Although I suppose it is still a form of step parent (if the mother had kept the child we would have called it a stepparent relationship even though the marriage had already taken place)

The person she had a relationship with may have died themselves during the war

Or, although it's not nice to think about, not all conceptions are consensual - there may not have been a relationship
