Schools in Bow and Poplar area
« on: Saturday 13 February 10 20:17 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Harvey family ( Lillie b 1886, Lottie b1888. Horace b 1890, Howard b 1893) who lived in the Bromley by Bow and Poplar areas and was wondering if there are any school records which could be helpful?

I have a few addresses from the baptism and census records. Does anyone know which schools would have been close by?

1888 27 Kerby St (baptism record, All Hallows Church) )
1891 and 1901 20 Spey St, Bromley By Bow (Census)
1893 114 Brunswick Road (baptism record All Hallows Church)

Many thanks

Bellou :) :)

Hi

If school records for the period have been deposited they will either be at Tower Hamlets archives or the London Metropolitan Archives. Schools of that period may or may not still be in existence. Records tend to largely be the headteachers' log books though it is possible some admission registers may survive.

Links to both the LMA and Tower Hamlets local history library and archives are in the help guide at the top of the London and Middlesex boards

Ancestry has a volunteer keying project recently started for london schools

So I guess after a while they will be searchable online (for a fee).

School admission registers can be very helpful. I found my great grandmothers school admission in 1893. She stayed at the school until 1897.

Hi Bellou,

Having lived within yards of Spey Street, I can probably help a little on this one, The following schools looked very old when I was a lad, and were within easy walking distance of your addresses.

Infants & Junior Schools:
Mayflower: Upper North Street, close to Kerby St.
Culloden: Dee Street, close to Brunswick Rd
Marner: Devas St, closest to Spey Street, although may have been in a different parish, so possibly Culloden too.

Senior:
Hay Currie, Cobden Street. Close to all addresses.
George Green, East India Dock Rd. Close to Kerby St.

However there were numerous school-like buildings which were still standing but used for other purposes in my day, so this is by no means a definitive list.

That is really useful, Paul. I will see if I can find the admissions records for these schools .  You didn't know any families called HARVEY in the area did you ?

Many thanks

Bellou :)

Hi, no memory of any HARVEY's from this area I'm afraid.

There was also a school opposite the north end of Spey St. in St.Leonards Rd. This must have been pulled down in the late 1950s, I cannot find any trace of its name yet.

The school at the north end of St Leonards Road was St Leonards Road School. My father attended there and I have a group photo in the school yard. It was damaged during the war and demolished. They built a large block of flats on the site next to the Limehouse Cut.

Hello Grollo. I’m new to Rootschat but have been researching my ancestors for several years. I’m now looking closer to home as it were, and saw your post about St Leonard’s Road school, which my Dad attended in the early 1930s. I wonder if you’d be kind enough to share your photo of the schoolyard with me? Many thanks. Sue
