Has anyone found them in Eng or Scotland on the later censuses?  I've found a possible in 1901 in  Bridgeton, Glasgow, aged 50 with a son Harry, aged 16,  but not sure  :-\

If says b. England

Thanks to all for trying - the possible in 1901 is indeed my gg grandfather, listed as John Steedwood with son Harry b. 1885 in Hawick - although Harry's place of birth is listed as Hawick, Renfrewshire which would come as a surprise to the residents of Hawick!! There's no sign of John Steadwood in any census before 1881 in the UK although the possibility given above is one I will investigate.

It is incredibly frustrating - but the posts on this thread and some of the others have stimulated thought, for example that my gg grandparents may have had an irregular marriage, that the birth was out of the UK - there's a lot of world out there to investigate.

My gg grandmother is fairly easy to trace back to Somerset, I even have a couple of photos of one of her children by her first marriage to John Petford.

So, as I say, thanks for trying, I'll post if I find anything.

That's the one. However, his year of death is 1908, parents John Steadwood, weaver and Ann Foreacres.

I've found a certificate for the birth of one of his children, Harry born 1884 and this gives the marriage for John and Janet as November 3 1881 in Carlisle.

Going to look for that one again but have had no joy there in the past.

Sorry  - slip of the keyboard  ;D

Foreacre is mainly a SW England surname as far as I can see - not tried anything with John senior yet but, if he was a weaver, it might well have been from that area and the move to Yorkshire would fit with the decline in the woollen/weaving trade down there.

Some of my in-law ancestors followed the same route.

It's worth exploring  - could WS be Wiltshire  :-\

Yes, this is the entire line for his census entry - hopefully OK re copyright.

Does the next line on the census, bear any relevance to your entry?

Yes, Janet is my gg grandmother. She previously married John Petford in 1873 - I have the wedding certificate but he died in 1876. By 1881 she was living in the same house as John Steadwood, my g grandfather George Petford was born in Wilton, Roxburghshire, Scotland in 1882. Janet had a tleast 7 children that I know of, 3 with John Steadwood, two with John Petford and two others.

Her family originated in Street, Somerset.

For those with access, my tree is on A******y, Steadwood family tree.

As earlier noted, there are variants on the Fouracres on both sides of the tree, Janet appears in 1871 and I think 1861 in Claverley with her family.

Sorry about the delay.

Considering the fact that there is a Scottish connection, have you thought that W/S might be Wigtownshire?
