Hi Dot,

In answer to Pm yes Annie Elizabeth is a  ROEBUCK.

http://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/content/cemeteries/Person.aspx?no=28771

as you can see the plot numbers are adjoining Annie plot 440 and Harriet plot 441 which is why I thought they must have been connected.

Rotten leg cramp woke me so will work on with this.

I found Annie Elizabeth in the Intestacy Returns as born Queensland, died Cairns, Townsville Court 15 May 1915, CIV 1158 and 30 Sep 1915, CV Page 919.

1915 electoral Roll gave Harriet's eligibility as

ROEBUCK Harriet Mary Domestic Duties date of claim - 30 July 1908 Lake Street
one entry she is listed on a page for "Left, Dead, Disqualified" as "Left"

1905 she is the only one at that address"independent means"

1915

ROEBUCK Annie Bourbong St Domestic Duties date of claim 25 May 1915 (Only Roebuck at that address)

1913 ROEBUCK Annie Elizabeth is listed as Domestic Duties - Florence Street.

Other ROEBUCKS at Florence St in 1913 -  Abel - Carpenter, Emma - Home Duties, Mark - Lab

1903 Abel is at Farrelly St Charters Towers. (PO Directory)

Getting more confused by the minute so looking at your 1881 UK Census to try to put it all together I see William 39, Harriet 44 and Dora Amy 11.

Looking at Queensland immigration there is an "Amy" of the right sort of age (15) arriving in 1884 aboard the LINLITHGOWSHIRE Presumably with her father William but he is a few years too young and there is also Albert aged 16 and I don't see an Albert in the census with the family. (though there are Alberts in Yorkshire)

Abel 39 and Emma 38 seem to arrive in 1886 aboard the DORUNDA with Louisa 21, Annie 16, and Mark 6. (So looks like there may be more than 1 Annie in Queensland)

There are 2 Harriets on the passenger lists but neither fit with age

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/downloads/Indexes/immigration/Roberts_Herbert-Ross_James.pdf

Going back to 1871 we have William 29, Harriet 34, Harriet 10, Sarah A 3 and Dora 1 so perhaps Harriet put her age down and that is her arriving in 1884 aboard the CHYEBASSA aged 36 with Sarah A aged 15. Perhaps William and Harriet did arrive separately both putting their ages down.  :-\ (We find a lot of people did put there ages down in order to meet immigration criteria.

Unfortunately Queensland BMD are down yet again so I can't look for an Annie Elizabeth born in Queensland to try to fit to the Cairns burial for Annie Elizabeth to try to work out how she may connect to Harriet.

Cheers Kris  :)

Hello  there Kris,  Up early here at 5.30

I had had a quick look at  this yesterday and couldn't tie Annie Elizabeth in immediately,  I felt she could have been William's sister. (but she doesn't appear to be so)

I have the Qld Pioneed index and there is no birth for an Annie  nor a marriage for an Annie to a Roebuck but that is only up too 1889.

The other Harriet Roebuck was married to Silvanus and she is in  the Brisbane cemetery.

I shall contact the Cairns cemetery and see what I can learn from them

There is a marriage 22/6/1887 in Qld reg no 1887/00099

SARAH ALICE ROEBUCK married Frederick BROOKMAN

two children to 1889
Florence Amy  4/9/1887 reg no 1887/000715
Isabell Harriet Elizabeth 14/3/1889 reg no 189/000551

Annie Elizabeth GIBSON was born 6/6/1882 reg no 1882/003950
Father Archibald Goodall GIBSON mother Jane Bennett

I cannot find a marriage in Qld for her

Four children with
Mother Annie Elizabeth GIBSON
Father Mark ROEBUCK

Mark 1905/6503
Frank 1910/1857
Iris 1912/2085
Annie Elizabeth Jane 1914/1857

The question remains is Mark Roebuck  the son of Harriett and William?

Hi Jenn,

No. Mark appears to be the son of Abel and Emma judging by the passenger list. Checking 1881 and yes the son of Abel and Emma from Bradfield Yorkshire  :-\

Hello,
Thankyou for all that wonderful information - Sarah A is on the 1871 census with them as is Dora and there is a Harriet also so that all fits in.  I will try to learn how to use your archives on line.
Is there any point in getting death, marriage or birth certificates ?  Will they give me any more information ?  If so I will ask my son to do it when he finally gets back on line, they moved house and have been off line ever since.
Yours Dot

That is a hard question to answer.   In  this case would a certificate give you any further information?

There was no male child to Harriett and William to carry on  the Roebuck name.

The daughters  certainly had children and we know their names  but to find living descendants?

Brookman is not that common a name neither is Gladwell.

Sarah Alice Roebuck and Frederick Brookman had the following children

1887/715 Florence Amy
married in 1914 to Adolph Wilhelm Magnus PETERSON reg no 1914/456
died in 1953 reg no 1953/44339  parents Fredrick Brookman Sarah Alice Roebuck
note buried in  the Cairns area cemetereies

1889/551  Isabell Harriet Elizabeth
married Archibald Green in 1920 reg no 1920/1088

1891/688  Dora Alice died in 1958 regno1958/2927 unmarried

1893/652  Lilian Margery
married in 1921 reg no 1921/2183 to Edward James COPP

1895/905  Elizabeth Alice
married in 1924 to Stephen James TUTTLE reg no 1924/2059

1895/906  Alice Elizabeth
married in 1916 Frederick Arthur De Graff  reg no 2860
Alice was buried19/12/1963 and Frederick 14/1/1945 both here in the Townsville cemetery, the spelling of the name is de graaaff, there are still de graaff's in the local area

1901/1454 May
married in 1929 to Bert Edward GARBETT reg no 1929/6429

I have contacted  the Cairns cemetery trhough a lovely lady at  the Cairns council and she has sent me a photo of the headstone and details of what was written on it when it was repaired looks as if it was vandalised at some point

so I will send it to you

thanks Jenn

thankyou Tropi that is wonderful, as always Roots Chat people are so helpful.
I believe there are descendants because some years ago someone contacted me through the Surnames page of the Huddersfield and District FHS and it was she who informed me that William had died in Australia.  Unfortunately she has either lost interest in family history or has changed her email address and I can no longer contact her.
