Soldiers who fought in the Battle of Waterloo
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 02:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Just wondering if anybody could advise if there is a list of soldiers names who fought in the Battle of Waterloo?

Our family "legend" has it that somebody fought there.  I have looked under the medals of the Battle of Waterloo and can't see anything.

Thanks

Medals for the earlier campaigns in the Penisular, France and the Americas were not authorised until 1847, and you had to be alive then, and claim it, to receive it. The Waterloo medal was however issued just after the battle. So if he is not listed on the roll he did not take part.

Thanks Ken,

I relooked over the list and he's not listed there, so I can now mark that one down as a family urban legend.

I have an ancestor who family legend states that he was a soldier having fought at the Battle of Waterloo, and that after he emigrated to South Australia, he used to travel to the city of Adelaide in a cart to collect his Chelsea Pension which was 6pence per day.  Is there a searchable list on the internet for these soldiers, or is someone able to do a look up for me.

Thanks

Isobelle

Hi Isobelle

You are really asking the same question as Nedda. The only list is the Waterloo medal roll, which is a book. But as you do not give a name you are not really allowing people to help you.

You could also try searching for his name on the NA Catalogue - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp - using WO as the series code. If you get a hit in either WO97 or WO121 it means there is some information on microfilm in Kew, which you can then order.

Thankyou Ron and Ken for your help. The name is WILLIAM BROTHERHOOD and we have been told he was a member of the 1st Dragoon Guards.

This link shows he was discharged the year before Waterloo - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATID=-4591194&CATLN=7&Highlight=%2CBROTHERHOOD&accessmethod=0&Summary=True

It refers to a pension record on microfilm in Kew.

Ken,

Thanks so much for your help here.  I will be able to contact Kew for a copy, a cousin is travelling to UK from Australia in July, so she may be able to collect it then for me.

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Isobelle.
