Glossop Heritage - Local & Family History
« on: Tuesday 23 February 10 14:01 GMT (UK) »
Glossop Heritage Trust is a registered charity which used to run a Heritage Centre in the town. Unfortunately, last year, as a result of losing income from local government cutbacks the Centre had to close, although the Trust is still going.

Part of the resulting upheaval meant that I became webmaster for the Trust.

Even though I say it as shouldn't we are now doing pretty well in building up a resource for people interested in local & family history in the area.

The web site is www.glossopheritage.co.uk so if you have an interest in North West Derbyshire (and over the border into Cheshire) why not have a look and let me know what you think.

Not Shaw Farm Walton's by any chance? Used to play there as a kid  :)

Have a look at http://www.glossopheritage.co.uk/indep.htm#i006 for a pic and some info on Littlemoor Chapel.

Hi Graham, i was sory to hear of the loss of the centre, but best of luck with the new site.
My connection with the area started in c 1952/3 when my stepfather became the landlord of the Organ Inn, Hollingworth, so i recall Sat nights, Victoria hall dance, with the Regent dance band, Sun. walking in the Park + a pint or two in Old Glossop, in the 1960s my wife & I lived in a flat in the old mill at Gnat Hole, very handy for walks across the local moors

Now there's a coincidence Tony. Gnat Hole Mill was built by my 4 x Great grandfather, John Robinson.

No dances at Victoria Hall these days. The council says it would breach the Disability Discrimination Act as putting in a lift to enable attendance by people unable to manage stairs would be well nigh impossible - and hellish expensive if it were possible.

I just about remember the Regent Dance Band but I moved away in 1968 so the memory is a bit dim  :)

I did manage a few pints in The Wheatsheaf at Old Glossop with some old schoolmates during a visit in December though  ;D
