Hi Pam,

Thanks for that.  It looks promising and I will check it out.

I wonder what is the connection, if any, between the two John/Ann Forster couples?

Regards,

Dennis

Hi Dennis

I had a quick look at Allendale parish records yesterday (and it was a quick look).  Found the following

baptism Joseph Forster 15 Oct. 1826, parents John and Ann, abode Stobs  also
baptism Hannah Forster 15 June 1829, same parents, abode Rowning Tree, Stobs.

There is a place called Stobbs Cross in the area so could be that.

There were also two other Jospeth Forsters bap. around that time - one in 1829, parents Joseph and Hannah;  the other in 1830, parents James and Mary.

Hope this helps a little bit

Christine

I have a Thomas Forster/Foster born 1815 in Allendale in my tree. Father was John (gleaned from his marriage cert). Have found two baptisms for Thomas 24/10/13 to father John, mother Ann (Sindrop Shield, Allendale, miner); 25/12/14 to father John and mother Anne (Hagg, Allendale). Thomas married Eleanor in newcastle in 1841 and was father to my great grandfather, John, born in 1842.
Not sure if this could be older brother of your ancestor? I am also sure there is a Joseph Forster in the churchyard of Allendale St Cuthbert's church. I ignored it at the time as I thought my ancestor was definitely a Foster, but now I have found he WAS a Forster in 1941/2 when married... So I will return to churchyard and take more notice! Will let you know. There were also several Forsters in Warden parish nearby, I believe.

I have found out that John Forster was born in 1789 in Kirkhaugh. He died, probably at Small Burns near carr Shield in 1870 (I have a copy of a photo of him with Small Burns written on the back; the photo says he was aged 80). He married Ann Robson on 03/03/1811 apparently and then went on to have (I believe) my great great grandfather, Thomas in 1813 at Sinderhope (possibly) and Joseph in 1826. John Forster's parents appear to be Thomas Forster and Dinah. Dinah may, big may, be Dinah Moor born 1761 in Knaresdale. Thomas was born in 1754. John 1789 had a brother Thomas born in Rattanrow Knarsdale in 1774. This Thomas had Rebecca 1805, Simonton 1807, Thomas 1810. Joseph 1812, Jane 1814, Margaret 1816 and William 1822. Believe that Thomas 1774's wife may have been a Simonton.
John and Ann had several more children that I am in the process of identifying.
Hope all this helps.
Please do let me know if you ahve any further info.
Many thanks,
R

Hi,

Thanks for this latest info.  Apologies for slow responses at times but I am a full time carer as well as researcher.  So thanks to Pam and Christine as well for their earlier input.

I have John Forster dying at 80 years in 1870 at Small Burns so that hangs together.

Following your info I found that Thomas & Dinah had offspring:
1) At Knarsdale, Thomas 28/12/1774, Rebecca 19/04/1778, Jane 30/12/1781 and Joseph 28/12/1783;
2) At Kirkaugh, William 09/04/1786 and John 18 Mar 1789.

For John & Ann Robson I have Children:
Joseph 1811-1822, Thomas 1813, Rebecca 1815-1845, Mary 1818, Ann 1821-1895, Jane 1826, John 1826, Joseph 1827-1902, Hannah 1830-1906, Robson 1833-1918 and Margaret 1836.  However, from what Christine contributed earlier some of their Baptismal dates might need refining.  I shall try to do that.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Dennis

Many thanks for that, Dennis. Bits of the jigsaw are coming together. I am hoping to visit Knarsdale and Allendale soon...so long as it doesn't snow. I am also in contact with a possible American connection. I will keep updating. Apologies if there are gaps though between my updates - I am a busy teacher and we have inspectors due any moment!
Best wishes,
Rosamond

I have just seen details of Smallburns Farm, Carrshield added in the discussion. I live in Smallburns and I  am very intrested in the history of the farm. I would love to hear from anyone who has knowledge of our farm and the past families who have lived here.

Many thanks
Debbie.
