The FERRIEs in Scotland
« on: Sunday 20 March 05 09:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Searching, as always, for Hessies, I found Hessie FERRIE's grandfather, John FERRIE in Scotland in 1881
(Errm ... credit where credit is due: it was actually winston who found them !
Thanks again, winston !)

these are the details for the FERRIE Family in Scotland in 1881:

Mary Ferrie Head Female 47 (1834) England
John Ferrie Son Male 23 (1858) United States Labourer, Boilermaker
Richard Ferrie Son Male 21 (1860) United States Labourer, Boilermaker
Theresa Ferrie Daur Female 20 (1861) United States Laundress

Between 1858 and 1861 the family was obviously still in the states.

As a result of a request on the USA board, DTrom managed to find them in 1860:

In the 1860 US census index they were listed as Ferrey
1860 US Census, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia County, Philadelphia (city), 15th Ward
Ferrey, John, age 26 b. Scotland, Occupation: Iron Moulder
           Mary, age 27, b. England
            John, age 3, b. Pennsylvania
           Richard, age 1, b. Pennsylvania

After a sleepness night ( NO, not because of the FERRIEs, I do have other problems, you know !) I thought of some more questions:

Before she married John, Mary was Mary HARLY:

- did John and Mary meet and marry in the States or in Britain ?
- when did they come to the States ?

Sometime between 1861 and 1881:

- John FERRIE died - when ?
- The family moved back to Scotland - when ?

Can anybody "see" them in Scotland on the 1871 census ???

Can anybody see anything else about them, anywhere ???

Family legend has it, that originally came from Islay.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob

Seeing as I was looking to burn some SP credits, I found this and hope they are yours
1871 (and I am having trouble reading it!)
District: Park County: Lanark Civil Parish: Givan? Village: Strathlingo?
Pollack xxxx? Rd Storyland's No 126

Mary Ann Ferrie Head 40 Mar Washerwoman England
John Son Unm 13 Moulder Apprentice America (B.Sub.)
Richard Son Unm 11 Scholar America(B.Sub)
Teresa Daur Unm 10 Scholar America (B.Sub)

Fairly sure it says Mar and not Wid for Mary Ann

Hi Trish,

that looks like a definite hit !! Thanks !!

On my "Ferries in America" posting a Chatter found a naturalisation cert. for a John Ferrie. Makes you wonder if Father-John stayed in the USA, but that begs the question, why did Mary, an englishwomen, come back to Scotland ???

I still think the whole family must have come back to Scotland and then Father-John either died here or skedaddled ! One day ....... !

Thanks again !
Bob

ps: the Givan? is most likely Govan, as there are other (later) Ferrie 'sightings' there, right down to Hessie M-i-L

pps: No time like the present, you are now immortalised on my web site, see link above. Hope you approve !

Janie, that is fantastic ! Thank you, very, very much !

This is almost a short story in itself :

Whow !! I certainly never thought of that as a source of information, the details are fantastic, parents of Theresa, Parents of husband, children - it's like finding them on an 1888 census plus parents details !

- maybe this is a good tip for other RootsChatters, too :)

Again,
Many thanks,
Bob
