Doonans of Bray
« on: Saturday 27 February 10 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking for anyone with a connection to the Doonan family who llived in Bray.
My gggrandfather was James Doonan born in Co. Meath, but found living in Bray on the 1911 census, he was a shepherd. His son and my ggrandfather Patrick is living on Aberdeen St.(Can't find it) in Bray on the same census. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Regards, Gordon.

I dont see an Aberdeen Street in a Thom's directory of the time (1914) but there is an Aberdeen Square. Described as off Main Street, consisting of 26 small houses. No further details are listed. In later years (1927 & 38) the same square is listed with 39 small houses. There's no mention of the place name in 1904.

The junction to Aberdeen Square is shown in the listing for main street listing as between numbers 74 and 75.

I had a look a few maps of Bray and believe and see what happened to Aberdeen St (see extracts below). In the 1909 map and the 1911 census, just a part of the square was built and was initially named Aberdeen street. In later years, starting by 1914, the other other four sides of the square were gradually built and the square completed by 1927.

Later on the square was renamed as James Connolly square, and is still present just off Bray main street via Sq. Kevin's square. See google map : James Connolly Square, Bray (frmly Aberdeen Square)

That's a brilliant effort Shane, my brother has recently moved to Bray on the Upper Dargle Rd so now I'll be able to tell him how close he is.

Hi, Gmac,

this thread is a little old, so not sure if you will pick up this message. I have some info on the Doonan family from Meath and Bray, including James and some of his children, as I'm doing some research with my partner who is a Doonan.

If you have scottish links, you might be interested to know that Patrick's brother William is listed on the local memorial to WW1 and it looks like he signed up to the Highland light Infantry and died on 01 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme
