Gents outfitters in Dublin

Hi

I wonder if anyone can help I am trying to find info on an ancestor Sarah Graham nee McCrea.  Sarah and her husband Robert Graham had a Gents outfitters shop in Dublin sometime between 1890 and 1920.  Their names were above the shop and i know they lived in Stephens Green and Roebuck Dundrum. 

Any help on this would be great

have you located them on the 1911 census ?

It's available on the National Archives website at : http://census.nationalarchives.ie/

I'll have a look at some directories from around that time and see if there is any sign of the business of residence.

think I've found them on the Census... Graham family, Roebuck

If this is the correct family, then it looks like it's Fredrich that's the outfitter. (Robert's a Gardener)

Thom's 1914,

4 St. Stephen Green North 

 Charles H. Walkey, civil & military tailor
 - res. Trevose, Palmerston Gardens
 (the same solicitor and fisheries co.s are also present)

Thankyou so much for all the help it is great.  I had found the census and saw Robert was a gardener but a living dcendant was sure he owned the business but she is very elderly now so must ff got a bit confused.

Neville Road is in Rathgar and is off Highfield terrace. Frederck is listed there in Thom's of 1927 :

 32  Neville Rd - Frederick Graham

the same address in 1938 shows a Frederick Thompson. (Not sure if this a mistake or the index and street listing sections a bit out of sync with the Rathgar street listing....or even connected to the Tower details mentioned below.. )

The other address is a bit of a problem, but should not be as it's probably very close to me. I cannot see any house or address named The Tower in the Clonskeagh area in the directories at the moment. Probably the best bet is something related to Clonskeagh Castle

the listings for this address are :

 1938 - Henry M. Whitten BL, Clonskeagh Castle
 1927 - Lt.Col. T.W. Thompson, Clonskeagh Castle

The historic OSI maps (1820s to 40s) shows a building named Thompson's Tower near to Clonskeagh Castle that could fit - see : Clonskeagh Castle / Thompson's Tower (select the historic or historic BW option) Both the Castle and Tower are present on an 1880 map also - see attached image below.

If this is the correct place, then it would be near to where Whitebeam Rd (which is off Clonskeagh Rd)  is now and could possibly have been considered as Milltown rather than Clonskeagh. I will keep searching..

You are a star.  Most of my Irish ancestors are from Fermanagh so this is great help as a few of us who are looking into the McCreas have not searched for anything in Dublin before and i am away in Glasgow but this is great for when i visit at some point and can have a look at where they worked and lived.

Linda Graham here, I came upon your post while looking back at my Dad, Brian's family.  He actually owned Graham's of the Green, 4 St. Stephen's Green.  He inherited from his father Victor Albert.  He grew up in Whitebeam, Clonskeagh and his grandfather Robert, was indeed head gardener, Clonskeagh Castle.  Sadly Dad passed away last year but I passed on the information to his sister.  She was very excited to hear of your search and has a wealth of information and photographs if you are still interested.  She doesn't have internet so I said I would make contact with you and maybe I could link you up with her.

My grandfather was the Frederick Graham you refer to. He died in 1944. I would love to talk to you both, and your aunt, Linda. I live 2 minutes walk from where I gather my great-uncle (Victor Albert) and his family lived - all in the grounds of Clonskeagh Castle where my great-grandfather Robert Graham was head gardener.
