Rickman's and Rolls Search
« on: Tuesday 02 March 10 21:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
I'm trying to trace the Rickman side of my family, William Jonas Born, Poole Dorset 07/1899, Died Southampton 03/1971.
Married to Emily Rolls born Blandford Dorset 07/1895, Died 07/1980 Southampton.
His Son Albert Charles "Ted" Rickman (My Father) Born Wimbourne, Dorset 05/1917, Died 07/1983. Dad fought in WW2 and served in the Paras, and with the RAOC, RASC. Was also at Nijmegen with American troops.

William Jonas "Bingy's" father was also William Jonas born 1874, died 1937.

Any information would be welcome

Kind Regards
Steve

Hi Steve, and welcome to RootsChat! :)

If you visit:

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

and look for births of William Jonas Rickman in Poole in 1899 . That looks like an exact match to me!!

If you take the reference they give which is Poole 5a 238 you can take it to the GRO at:

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

and order it. You will then know both his parents' names.

Good luck, and have fun!

P.S.

You may also like to order William Jonas Rickman b1874 Lymington 2b 597. This looks very much like his father. :)

Hi Paul

Brilliant thanks very much for that i wasn't expecting a reply so soon!!

I'll check those out, we seemed to hit a bit of a wall on the Rickman side, so this will be a great help.

Many Thanks for your time and Kind Regards

Steve

No problems Steve,

You will find many many people here on RootsChat who can do this kind of thing in their sleep. :D You can do it now too. FreeBMD is a fabulous resource. Get used to using it. :)

Remember though, most of the fun is in the search. Enjoy the thrill but ask here if you're stuck and frustrated.

The 1901 census (RG13/1978) confirms William's father as another William, originally from Hampshire.

I can give you the details of the rest of the family in the 1901 census if you want. (Earlier censuses give at least two further generations). The same is true for Emily Rolls if you want them.

Hi Richard,
Thank you that's very kind indeed! Funny my Father was born in Wimbourne as you can see from my first post.
I must say i'm new to all this but everyone seems so very helpful. I am struggling a bit at the moment with the Rickman and Rolls side.
Even on my Mothers side (Moore) there seems to be so many repetitive forenames, handed down father to son.

That would be very kind Richard and help greatly appreciated.

I have just sent off for my Fathers Army records, on behalf of my mother, who is still alive and living near Calne Wilts. Hopefully this will be interesting if their recovered from the MOD.

I'm really doing all this so that i can pass it all down to my Sons, before everything goes out of living memory.

Many thanks in advance, and if i can be of any assistance please don't hesitate

Kind Regards
Steve

Hi Richard,

Well that started to thrown some light on the picture! Thank you.

Interesting how some of the Rolls children, we have a Frank 11 and a Thomas 16 don't appear plus some older siblings also, that had probably moved away.

I guess could be infant mortality maybe that also accounts for Frederick Rickman missing 10 years later! I wonder in what month they took the census, I guess it would put Frederick's DOB @ 1901.
But maybe they were put to work as children back then.

Thank you very much for your assistance, that is really helpful, i really appreciate it.

Kind Regards

Steve
