Hi

That would make sense if it was a boarding house, as my grandmother was in the middle of an acrimonious divorce and had a sister living on the Isle of Man

Hi Tilly

The Cliffs was a boarding house in Laxey. One of my Quines is the boarding house manager in the 1911 census. It only shows her and her children there. Not sure where her husband (surname Comish) is though and there aren't any lodgers detailed there - I would have though they would be added as visitors? Its detailed as having 10 rooms. It is mis-transcribed however at The Clipps on ancestry. I will add the correction so its easier to locate

Name:   Sarah Jane Comish
Age in 1911:   41
Estimated birth year:   abt 1870
Relation to Head:   Wife
Gender:   Female
Birth Place:   Lonan, Isle of Man
Civil Parish:   Lonan
Country:   Isle of Man
Street address:   The Clipps Laxey I O M
Marital Status:   Married
Years Married:   Under 13
Occupation:   Boaring House Keeper
Registration district:   Isle of Man
Registration District Number:   635
Sub-registration district:   Lonan
ED, institution, or vessel:   13/6
Household schedule number:   4
Piece:   34710
Household Members:
Name   Age
Sarah Jane Comish   41
Willie Comish   12
Wray Comish   11
Elsie Comish   10

Is it still standing? I haven't been to the IOM for about 30 years and I think we stayed in Douglas, I was only 6ish at the time but I remember going to the Laxey wheel and visiting family.

Thanks for confirming that my grandmother wasn't there for the census.

I've just checked the properties on either side on the returns. Fairy Cottage is listed seperately and iin Lonan, then there is Blundle Terrace, a Stroun (?) Villa and two properties referred to as The Cliffs, both with 10 rooms. The one where my ancestor is boarding house manager is detailed as The Cliffs, Laxey. The other is The Cliffs, South Cape, Laxey.  The parish for both is Lonan though. I can't see a Rachel on any of them, but maybe you would want to give your guests some privacy? I don't know what the standard response would be for a boarding house. Strictly speaking I'm sure they 'should' divulge their guests details, but neither one do in this case. My Great Grandmother is missing on both the 1891 and 1901 census. Its annoying but I guess some people didn't want to be found or were genuinely missed.
