Spittal village, nr Solva pre 1900
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 07:39 GMT (UK) »
Hello friends,

I am delighted to find this  lively forum as
my current research interest  concerns the pre 1900
occupants at The Old Corn Mill, Spittal, near Solva.
Can anyone help with this?

Also hope to find where the Spittal village school records
are archived. The family of  the farmer is believed to
be BATEMAN.

Many thanks, I hope to hear from you

I have searched the O.S. map for the area around Solva and can find no reference to “Spittal Mill”, so I suspect the Mill of your interest is some way from the village and situated in the parish of Spittal, N.E. of Haverfordwest.
This would appear to be confirmed by the non appearance of the Bateman surname in Whitchurch/St David’s Parish around the time of your interest, but the name does occur during the 19th century at Ambleston Parish which is adjacent and north of Spittal Parish.
For your interest the Mill at Spittal still exists and is I believe a private home.
From my own research a probable ancestor in 1624 is noted quote  “a mill called Spitle Mill in the occupation of William Oriel of Haverfordwest Sherman”. William at this time was an innocent party caught in the middle of a court case of none payment of rent for the Mill and half a messuage to the tune of £50 between John Tanke and Thomas Adams.
I have emailed an acquaintance of mine who may well have far more info on Mills of Pembs, so if anything further is forthcoming I shall pass on your details to him.

Hello Orielbenfro

many thanks for your quick response - much appreciated and
would of course be happy to hear from your contact.

Meantime I have managed to dip into Census 1911
Enumeration District 22 RG14 33259 Reg District Haverfordwest
parish of Spittal and made a big hit.

James Elliot BATEMAN 28 yrs Farmer, Corn Miller, Traction Owner b.1883
(that's great) together with his wife Clara Ann b 1883 and family.
The records from the Village School  would be a bonus.

thank you again for your interest.

Jean M

I wonder if the traction engine James owned was built in the Engineering works of Eastback Pembroke ??
Since they married in 1902 and both born in 3rd Qtr 1882 do I presume they were both chapel and it is the post 1902 school records you seek.
A quick email to the Record Office will tell you what if any skool records for Spittal are avilable, they will only search the records for 15ukp per hour see ;

Hello,

Now fully focussed on the parish details and the
correct location.

The reference to Solva was my mistake. It has been
confirmed that members of the family concerned
had been resident there.

Many thanks for the link to vital records.

Also hope to find where the Spittal village school records
are archived.
I had a look at School Records catalogue today at the Record Office, I would suggest that all information you will require plus a bit extra may well be available to you at the Record Office for Spittal School. Of course I do not know the exact details you seek but from the catalogue am reasonable confident the periods you want are there.

Historical Directories has a couple of references to a Spittal Mill for Pemb's -

Kelly's Directory Monmouthshire + S Wales 1895 Pt2 "Davies, Lewis, Spittal Mill, Spittal, Treffgarne R.S.O Pembs" (I think RSO refers to a railway stop?)
Kelly's Directory Monmouthshire + S Wales Pt 1 1895 "Davies, Lewis, Spittal Mill, Steynton"
Slater's Directory of N + S Wales 1880 Pt 1 "Llewellyn, Thomas, Spittal Mill, Haverfordwest".
Worrall's Directory of S Wales 1875 "Llewellin, Thomas, Spittal Mill, Haverfordwest"

Re Spittal Mill & the Bateman family Clara Ann Evans was my great grandmother my Grandmother Amelia May Bateman born 1907 lived at the mill with her parents and two brothers. I have a partial family tree for the Batemans going back to 1760's if you need further info
