Tomachepolsky - Help me ??
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 17:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find some more detailed information about some relatives who were understood to be residing in the East End of London in the early 1900's.

I know that Joesph Tomachepolsky (also known as Tomas) was born around 1899 (location unknown.)

I know Joseph married Esther Hymas in 1921 and that his fathers name was Issac (age and birth place unknown)

It is understood that both Issac and Joseph may have been from the Russia/Poland area.

Both were involved in the fur industry and i have found details of business in the 1920's.

I am looking particularly for help in tracing the lives of Joesph and Issac prior to 1900.

Any help or information relating to this research would be greatfully accepted.

Hello,

This is a bit of a tricky one.

I see that Joseph's surname was recorded as Tomachpolsky in the registration index. So whether the additional 'e' is an important part of the original pronunciation is hard to say.

To marry in a synagogue, the couple would have needed a marriage authorisation from the Chief Rabbi. This document generally recorded the birth places of both bride and groom.

A copy of the document should be obtainable for a fee of £15 from the:

Rabbi Dr. Julian Shindler
Director of the Marriage Authorisation Office
Office of the Chief Rabbi
305 Ballards Lane
London N12 8GB

Tel. 020 8343 6313
Fax. 020 8343 6310
email: Rabbi.Shindler [at] chiefrabbi.org

Regards,

Justin

Ciao Joel,

Welcome to rootschat!

So your mother is a granddaughter of Jacob Froim Tomachepolsky (Tomas) and his wife, Annie formerly Thorpe. Who were her parents?

I have been puzzling over the origins of this family, and have come to the conclusion that the original name was Tomashpolski.

The ending -ski is common in Slavic surnames and simply means from or of. Tomashpolski means from or of Tomashpol. The town is now called Tomashpil, southwest of Kiev in western Ukraine, less than 50km from the Moldovan border.

The UK's National Archives hold a file relating to Jacob's application to become a naturalised British subject. The file would probably reveal his actual place of birth on 16th October 1893.
