"40th Regiment of Foot"?

Hi!
My GGGG Grandfather James Wassell b. 1774 in Old Swinford, Worcestershire (married Hannah Cure), served with the 40th Regiment of Foot. Does anybody know of some web site which may mention this regiment or hold records of such?

40th Foot was originally the 1st Batallion  The South Lancashire Regiment and then in 1783 , if I am correct,  the 2nd Somersetshire Regiment searching on those for a museum might find one of interest to you.

Out of interest PRO under the file WO97 hold the following:-

WO 97/433/27 WILLIAM WASSELL Born OLDSWINFORD, Worcestershire Served in 23rd Foot Regiment Discharged aged 40  1804-1822
WO 97/520/106 RICHARD WASSELL Born SWINBORNE, Worcestershire Served in 34th Foot Regiment Discharged aged 28  1813-1823
WO 97/1268/226 SAMUEL WASSELL Born HAGLEY, Worcestershire Served in Royal Artillery Discharged aged 47  1832-1853

Hi Ryan

I don't know whether you have seen this website? It does say British Regiments in Canada but covers pretty much everything connected to each regiment.

If you are near a Family History Library (the familysearch folks), you can apparently borrow in films with Soldiers Documents. Find the regiment in the link and click on Soldiers Documents. Then look for the film number that should contain his name.

The films are also apparently available at the National Archives.
