I have several skeins of yarn with a label "AYR Scotch Wools Inc" ... I just wanted to know more about it so googled the name and ended up here. I found the yarn in a second hand store along with some very similar skeins from Restalrig Mills in Edinburgh. I'm now wondering just how old the yarn is, it's in beautiful shape but must be very old!

In the late 70s I bought a Templetons knitting pattern for a babies shawl knitted in 2 ply Templetons wool.
I have knitted many shawls over the years for many people

Any connection with Templeton's carpet factory in Glasgow?

I do not see in which year this topic was raised, but here's some information.

The location of the carpet factory, at the corner of Fort Street and Charlotte Street, is clearly shown on the large scale Ayr town plan, ordnance survey 1856. This is available online at the National Library of Scotland:-

https://maps.nls.uk/view/74951258

Reference and details of the fire, and some harrowing accounts of the deaths and injuries, are described in the following article available at New Zealand National Library (I have come across other information available on the far side of the world regarding situations in Ayr!):-

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP18760821.2.16

The following map, 1937, shows the spinning mill in Mill Street, which I understood as having grown up in Ayr, was the Templeton factory. Zoom into the map, looking for Station Road and Victoria Bridge. Just before the bridge, in a north westerly direction you will see Mill Street, and up there on the left adjacent to the tannery was the spinning mill.

I understood from comments made by my parents who knew the Templetons, they had a carpet factory in the Glasgow area, and i would count Paisley as meeting that.

I would appreciate a PM from "maisie76" regarding "Wyllie, Ayrshire"
