Ameila Horsford
« on: Friday 12 March 10 22:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me with Amelia Horsford b. c1826 in Netherbury Dorset.

On the 1851 census she is with her sister and brother in law in Knottingley (transcribed Horsfield) and an annuitant (I think).

How would one find out details of the annuity?

Thanks in advance
Jo

it would be difficult-I would think -sometimes a will can be found where children are left an allowance of x pounds per year -but the term annuitant is quite "loosley " used

Definition of terms used on census forms
"Annuitant" -the term annuitant could describe someone on an annual allowance as well as someone receiving annual income from an investment. Often, however, it was also used for institutionalised pensioners

Thanks suzard

She definitely wasnt an institutionalised pensioner as she will only have been 25.

I also dont know who her parents were - I was hoping I could find out through the annuity!!

She was the sister of my 3 x G Grandmother - seems like another brick wall  :(

FreeREG has a Marriage in Netherbury 1816 of John HORSFORD and Margaret CORNFOOT
Not sure how that fits though.

Im 99.9% sure that this is them - I found Amelia's marriage last night whilst browsing and one of her children has the middle name Cornfoot.

Still curious as to where the annuity came from!!

Thanks guys - thats another generation for me  ;D

Hi Again,

I think the dittos were incorrect in the 1841 Census.
It looks to me that Margaret/Amelia and Mary are his Family.

Possible death;
John HORSFORD, March 1847, Honiton, 10 115

If John died he probably was fairly well off being an Innkeeper so may have left an Annuitity for his Daughters and Wife in his Will.
I havent found him in 1851 Census.
Maybe there is a Will.

Do you have Marys Marriage Cert to confirm her Fathers name and occupation?

Trish :)

Thanks Trish  ;D

I dont have the cert no, I know they were married in London and it was her 2nd marriage (on their son's birth certificate she is Mary Osburn, Denziloe, Horsford) and the marriage to John Osburn was as Mary Denziloe - to say its such an unusual name though I cant seem to see any info!!

I presume that it was John [Osburn's] occupation as a mariner that took him to London but dont know why Mary was there nor can think how they could have possibly met!!

Where is Honiton?

I think Mary and John's marriage cert may have to be the next one on my list and if that confirms 'we' are on t he right track I think it will be time to look for a will.

Do you know if that can be searched online?

Also, (sorry for all the questions) - would a master mariner (death 1904) likely have left a will too?

Thanks again
Jo  ;)

Hmmmmmm  ???

Lets assume for now that the death above is 'my' John and assuming that he and Margaret are the parents of Mary & Amelia (all very likely but confirmation needed).

My latest puzzle is where the devil has Margaret gone?

I have found a likely death:

Name:    Margaret Horsford
Birth:    abt 1791
Death:    Mar 1867 - Pontefract, Yorkshire - West Riding, West Yorkshire

Both her daughters were in this area with their husbands and familes so its another likely!

HOWEVER, where is she on the 1851 and 1861 because I just cant find her (I wanted to see if she was also an annuitant) - am I going mad?

Any help would be appreciated.
Jo
