James Thomas Spackman c1847 1901 Census lookup
« on: Tuesday 16 March 10 10:16 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for James Thomas Spackman born c1847 Marylebone. He is married, and i've not found him on the 1901. His wife and children i've found in london, but no mention of him. I woulkd expect his surname to have been mis-transcribed.

Any help woulkd be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Browny

In case it is of help James Thomas Spackman was born on 19 April 1847 and baptised at All Souls, Marylebone on 16 May 1847. His parents were William and Jemima of 2 Cirencester Place.

There is a marriage of James Thomas Spackman (age 51, bachelor, house decorator) to Mary Ann Hillman (age 51, widow) at St Pancras Church on 7 March 1898. His father is named as William Spackman (laundryman, deceased). Her father is named as Daniel Grange (sawyer or lawyer, deceased). The witnesses were Albert Cannon and Mary Stafford.

Who is the Sarah (aged 47) with him and identified as his wife in 1901 (RG13; Piece: 79; Folio: 74; Page: 48)?  ???

Hi

Interesting then looking at the details of James Spackman's first marriage

St Pancras Parish Church 31st October 1870
James Spackman Full Age Bachelor Plasterer Drummond Street William Spackman Laundry man
Matilda Grainge Full Age Spinster Drummond Street Daniel Grainge Sawyer
Marriage by banns
Both signed
Witnesses Robert Stone and M Buderidge?

Mary Ann Hillman's first marriage

Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill 16th June 1862
Daniel Hillman 22 Bachelor Fireman 3 Ferdinand Street James Hillman Gardener
Mary Anne Grainge 18 Sprinster Daniel Grainge Sawyer
Marriage by banns
Both signed
Witnesses Daniel Grainge his mark and Elizabeth Adams her mark

A first look it appears to be a bigamous marriage on the part of James Thomas with his sister-in-law, but then the evidence shows that Mary Ann and Matilda are in fact the same person. On the Spackman children's baptisms she appears as Mary Ann, Matilda and Mary Ann Matilda. She was baptised 6th September 1846 at St Mary's Paddington as Mary Ann Grange. Her first marriage to James is likely to be the bigamous one which was why is was repeated when her 'husband' died. Since divorce was beyond the means of most working people this wasn't an uncommon event particularly if it was done to the mutual satisfaction of both parties and Daniel appears to have lived with two other women and had children with at least one of them but he doesn't appear to have married bigamously.

1851 census HO107 1466 folio 126
15 Bellings Place Paddington
Daniel Grainger 40 Head Married Labourer Sawyer Paddington Middlesex
Louisa Grainger 40 Wife Married Paddington Middlesex
Daniel Grainger 18 Son Labourer Sawyer Paddington Middlesex
Louisa Grainger 11 Daughter Paddington Middlesex
Mary Grainger 5 Daughter Paddington Middlesex
George Grainger 2 Son Paddington Middlesex

It doesn't answer the question who Sarah was. To marry again when it was legal to do so after all those years (Daniel probably died in 1894), but then go off with another woman fairly shortly afterwards........
He doesn't seem to have married Sarah.

His death registration?

Deaths Jun 1910
Spackman  James  63  Fulham  1a 121

Do you know who registered his death?

Her death registration?

Deaths Mar 1919
Spackman  Matilda M A  70  Croydon  2a 475

Hello

I have come across your thread when googling the name 'M Buderidge'. I was quite amazed to see that your James Spackman had exactly the same witnesses at his wedding as my great-great grandparents, namely Robert Stone and M Buderidge.

So now my question is: why would these two people be the witnesses at the weddings of two completely unconnected marriages, each 10 years apart? Did the churches have professional witnesses at this time?

Regards, Di

Witnesses were sometimes church wardens or sidesman at the church so it is quite possible to have the same witnesses 10 years apart.

Hello Di, I have looked back through the register and both names show numerous times as witnesses , so I would think they are used as witnesses by the church.

Thanks for that information, Jennifer.
Are these registers open for anyone to read on line?
I would also be interested to know if any other couples were married at this same time.
